Max Scherzer is making his return to the Toronto Blue Jays. Just two weeks into spring training, the three-time Cy Young winner has inked a one-year deal worth $3 million with last season's American League champions. This agreement, which remains pending a physical, could see Scherzer earn up to an additional $10 million in performance bonuses, starting at 65 innings pitched.
Last season, Scherzer, now 41, posted a 5-5 record with a 5.19 ERA over 17 starts and 85 innings for the Blue Jays, marking his 18th year in the majors. He also made three postseason starts, including a standout performance against Seattle in the AL Championship Series. Despite a strong showing in Game 7 of the World Series against the Dodgers, where he exited to a standing ovation, the Blue Jays fell short in an 11-inning thriller.
Having signed a one-year, $15.5 million contract with Toronto in February 2025, Scherzer re-enters the fold as a free agent this winter, ready to bolster a rotation that features the likes of Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and others.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider has praised Scherzer for his fearless approach and willingness to challenge all aspects of the game, from baserunning to defense. Scherzer's leadership and curiosity make him a valuable asset both on and off the field.
With two World Series titles under his belt, one with Washington in 2019 and another with Texas in 2023, Scherzer's illustrious career includes eight All-Star selections. His record stands at 221-117 with a 3.22 ERA across several teams, and he's 11th on the all-time strikeout list with 3,489 Ks, just 20 shy of Hall of Famer Walter Johnson.
As Scherzer gears up for another season, his experience and competitive spirit promise to add depth and leadership to the Blue Jays' pitching staff.
