Penn State's head coach, Matt Campbell, has been working tirelessly to recruit quarterback Will Mencl, a name that's quickly rising in the ranks. Initially unranked, Mencl has now caught the eye of major recruiting platforms like Rivals and 247Sports.
Recently, Mencl made a significant leap in the Rivals300 rankings, now listed as one of the top uncommitted quarterbacks. While Elijah Haven and Israel Abrams hold the top spots, Mencl's rise to a four-star prospect is turning heads. Standing at 6'3" and weighing in at 200 pounds, Mencl is ranked 12th among quarterbacks nationally and is the fifth-best QB according to Rivals Industry Rankings.
Despite Oregon being the frontrunner for Mencl's commitment, Penn State was ahead of the curve, recognizing his potential early on. Coach Campbell extended an offer back in January, showing faith in Mencl before he became a hot commodity.
Mencl's recruitment journey has been busy. He's taken unofficial visits to Oregon, Minnesota, and North Carolina, and even attended a camp at Minnesota.
Although Oregon seems to have a strong chance of landing him, with a 99.4% prediction from Rivals, the competition is fierce. Programs like Auburn, Miami, Duke, and Missouri are also vying for his talents, with a total of 26 offers on the table.
In his junior year, Mencl showcased his dual-threat capabilities, completing 258 of 367 passes for 3,815 yards and 22 touchdowns, alongside 741 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground. His impressive stats make him a coveted recruit.
As it stands, the Nittany Lions are still looking to secure their first commitment from the Class of 2027, and Mencl could be a game-changer for Penn State's future.
