Penn State football kicked off its spring season with head coach Matt Campbell sharing insights about the team, particularly spotlighting the defensive prowess of Yvan Kemajou. This young defensive end made waves during his freshman year in 2025, stepping up when it mattered most.
Kemajou’s journey began quietly, but it didn't take long for him to make an impact. Playing in 11 games, including a start, he showcased his skills in the latter part of the season under interim head coach Terry Smith.
With 13 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a couple of pass breakups, Kemajou's stats tell the story of a player coming into his own. Notably, 11 of those tackles were recorded after Smith took the helm, underscoring his growing influence on the field.
The end of the season saw Kemajou shine against Nebraska, Rutgers, and Clemson in the Pinstripe Bowl, where he racked up seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and all his season sacks. Campbell was effusive in his praise, highlighting Kemajou’s exceptional ability and untapped potential.
"His ability is as high as anybody we've coached," Campbell remarked, emphasizing the standout moments Kemajou delivered as a freshman.
Smith recognized Kemajou's potential early, ensuring he received the playing time his performance warranted. Initially averaging 10 snaps per game, Kemajou's role expanded significantly after James Franklin's departure, with his snap count rising to 26 per game, peaking at 41 in the Pinstripe Bowl.
As Penn State gears up for the new season, Campbell and his coaching staff are identifying key players who will form the backbone of the team. With Chaz Coleman transferring to Tennessee, the door is wide open for Kemajou to step into a more prominent role. His development, work ethic, and tenacity make him a promising cornerstone for the Nittany Lions' future.
"This kid is going to be a major part of Penn State's future," Smith stated, praising Kemajou's growth and determination. As the spring season unfolds, all eyes will be on Kemajou to see how he continues to evolve and impact the team.
