Marcus Blaze is making waves for Penn State wrestling at the NCAA Championships, and he's doing it with style and aggression.
After a tough loss to Ohio State's Ben Davino in the Big Ten championship, where Blaze managed just one point, there was chatter about his need to amp up the aggression. Well, if that's the mission, he's certainly on track in Cleveland.
In his NCAA Championship debut, Blaze faced off against Oregon State’s Gabe Whisenhunt, the No. 30 seed. Blaze dominated with a 17-2 tech fall in just five minutes and 30 seconds, earning Penn State five crucial team points right off the bat.
Continuing his momentum, Blaze took on Missouri’s Gage Walker, the No. 19 seed, in the Round of 16. The result? Another commanding 17-2 victory, bringing his tally to 34 points across two matches.
Blaze, a standout recruit from Perrysburg, Ohio, arrived at Penn State with high expectations. Having clinched his fourth state title last year, he made a significant jump from 138 to 150 pounds, showcasing the versatility that fast-tracked his college career. Settling at 133 pounds, Blaze was unbeaten until the Big Ten final.
Entering the NCAA Championships with a 21-1 record and over 77% of his victories coming with bonus points, Blaze was a force to be reckoned with. His only blemish was a razor-thin 2-2 loss to Davino, decided by riding time after two tiebreakers, raising questions about his aggression.
Those questions were quickly answered in his initial NCAA matches. Blaze is on a path that might lead him back to a showdown with Davino, whom he previously edged out 3-2 in a dual meet at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Blaze might also face Oklahoma State’s Jax Forrest, the No. 1 seed and another true freshman phenom. But before those potential matchups, Blaze has to get past No. 6 Drake Ayala from Iowa, a familiar opponent he’s already defeated twice this season, including at the Big Ten Championships.
Blaze is not just competing; he's making a statement. If he keeps up this level of performance, the wrestling world better take notice.
