Levi Haines Stuns as One of Penn State Wrestling's Best Ever

Levi Haines, a standout in Penn State wrestling, has become a legendary figure through unwavering dedication and remarkable achievements, setting an inspiring path for future champions.

Penn State's Levi Haines is gearing up for his swan song at the NCAA Championships, marking the end of an illustrious college wrestling career. Haines stands as one of the elite, one of only four wrestlers in Penn State's storied history to clinch four Big Ten titles. His journey began when he made the bold decision to leave high school early, forgoing his senior year to train with wrestling legends in State College.

Five years ago, Haines swapped his high school life in Biglerville-where he had just secured a state title and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends-for the rigorous training environment at Penn State. Under the mentorship of Olympian David Taylor and the guidance of coach Cael Sanderson, Haines honed his skills, becoming a cornerstone of the Nittany Lions' success.

With the NCAA Championships in Cleveland on the horizon, Haines reflects on his time with the team. The Lions recently dominated the Big Ten Championships, setting records for team points and individual titles. Haines added another league title to his name, joining the ranks of Penn State greats like Ed Ruth, Aaron Brooks, and his mentor, David Taylor.

In a recent interview, Haines expressed gratitude for his journey, emphasizing the importance of dreaming big and betting on oneself, especially for kids from small towns like his own. His rise from Biglerville to wrestling stardom is a testament to his determination and talent.

Haines' career at Penn State has been nothing short of remarkable. He burst onto the scene as a freshman, quickly finding a spot in the starting lineup and finishing as an NCAA runner-up at 157 pounds.

The following year, he achieved a perfect 23-0 dual meet record and claimed his first NCAA title. After moving up two weight classes, he finished third at the NCAA's in his junior year.

Now, he's poised to take the 174-pound class, having lost only four times during his entire collegiate career.

Coach Sanderson praises Haines for his consistency and drive, noting his aspirations to become a world and Olympic champion. Haines' approach to the sport is characterized by his quiet dedication and willingness to seize every competitive opportunity.

Off the mat, Haines is known for his humility and camaraderie. Sanderson describes him as a kind-hearted and genuine individual, a friend to all, and a fierce competitor. As Haines looks to the future, there’s hope he will continue his journey with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, contributing to the sport he loves.

Levi Haines' legacy at Penn State is one of excellence and integrity, both as an athlete and as a person. As he prepares for his final collegiate competition, he leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations of wrestlers.
