Kiyomi McMiller Stuns Fans with Scoring Streak for Penn State WBB

Kiyomi McMiller's scoring spree has Penn State women's basketball eyeing a Big Ten Tournament berth, with her exceptional performances becoming a game-changer this season.

As the regular season winds down, Kiyomi McMiller of Penn State women's basketball is lighting up the court in spectacular fashion. The sophomore point guard has been on a scoring spree throughout February, notching at least 30 points in five straight games. Her standout performance came with a career-high 37 points against Michigan, a feat she matched in an 87-78 victory over her former team, Rutgers.

McMiller's scoring ability has always been impressive, but this recent stretch showcases her reaching new heights. "Kiyomi is super confident right now from all three levels," head coach Carolyn Kieger noted. "Her 3-point shot is on point, and her ability to get to the free-throw line has been crucial in our recent wins."

Before this run, McMiller's season-high for free-throw attempts was eight. She's since improved, going 9-for-12 against Purdue and 9-of-11 against Northwestern, both resulting in victories. Even her 6-for-9 performance against Rutgers marks progress in penetrating defenses and drawing fouls.

Efficiency has been another key to McMiller's scoring surge. While she's been a consistent 15-to-20-point scorer all season, it often required numerous shot attempts. Recently, she's averaging 33.2 points per game on just 24 field-goal attempts, a significant improvement.

"Getting to the free-throw line helps, and her finishes around the rim have been top-notch," Kieger said. "She's taking what's available and playing inside-outside with Gracie Merkle, and their synergy is evident."

As the Lady Lions approach their final two regular-season games, maintaining offensive balance is crucial. While McMiller and Merkle are the primary scoring threats, it's essential for the other players to remain engaged to prevent defenses from focusing solely on them.

"We have some great spot-up shooters who prevent teams from double or triple-teaming Gracie," Kieger explained. "We emphasize passing up a good shot for a great one and trusting teammates."

Penn State faces a must-win game against Jazzy Davidson and USC in their final home contest. A victory would boost their chances of making the Big Ten Tournament, while a loss could end their hopes. Currently, the Lady Lions stand at 10-17 overall and 3-13 in the Big Ten, making this next matchup critical.
