As the Kentucky Wildcats and No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones gear up for their second-round NCAA Tournament clash in the Midwest Region, fans are in for a treat.
The showdown at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis promises to be a thrilling encounter, with tip-off set for 2:45 p.m.
ET on CBS.
Kentucky, the seventh seed, narrowly escaped the first round with a nail-biting 89-84 overtime victory against the Santa Clara Broncos. The Wildcats were 3.5-point favorites, and the game hit the Over at 156.5.
Guard Otega Oweh was the standout performer, sinking a buzzer-beater from just inside half court to force overtime and sealing the win with crucial free throws. Oweh's all-around game was on full display as he notched a career-high 35 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Forward Mouhamed Dioubate also made a significant impact off the bench, contributing 18 points, 8 boards, and 3 blocks.
On the other side, Iowa State, the No. 2 seed, cruised through their first-round matchup, dismantling the Tennessee State Tigers 108-74. The Cyclones easily covered the 24.5-point spread, with the Over hitting at 147.
They set program records for points in a tournament game (108), points in a half (55), and assists (24). Guard Nate Heise led the charge with a season-high 22 points.
However, there was a slight hiccup when All-American forward Joshua Jefferson left the game with an ankle injury. Fortunately, X-rays were negative, diagnosing it as a sprain.
The Cyclones are also keeping an eye on guard Tamin Lipsey, who’s been dealing with a groin issue.
Both teams are eyeing a spot in the Sweet 16, with Kentucky aiming for back-to-back appearances and Iowa State seeking their third in five seasons. Historically, Iowa State has yet to defeat Kentucky, having lost all three prior matchups, including two second-round tournament exits in 1992 and 2012.
As for the betting outlook, Iowa State is favored by 4.5 points. The Cyclones' defensive prowess, especially in forcing turnovers, could be pivotal. Kentucky struggled with turnovers in their opener and lost the rebounding battle, a worrying sign against a physical Iowa State squad that excels in controlling possessions.
The Over/Under is set at 145.5. Both teams have shown they can light up the scoreboard, with Kentucky hitting the Over in five of their last seven games and Iowa State doing so in their last two. Expect a competitive game where late fouling could push the total Over.
In summary, Iowa State's depth, defense, and fresh legs give them the edge. If they can dictate the pace and win the possession battle, they have a strong chance to advance to the Sweet 16.
