Jets Trade Quarterback Justin Fields to Chiefs in Bold Move

Jets trade quarterback Justin Fields to the Chiefs, seeking new opportunities for both the player and the team in a move that reflects shifting strategies for the upcoming NFL season.

The New York Jets have struck a deal to send quarterback Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Jets will receive a 2027 sixth-round draft pick in exchange, while also covering $7 million of Fields' $10 million guaranteed salary for the upcoming season. This trade is still pending a physical examination.

Fields, now 27, joined the Jets last March on a two-year, $40 million contract, with $30 million guaranteed. He started most of the season before being benched for Tyrod Taylor in Week 12. Fields didn't see the field again, ending the season on injured reserve due to a knee injury.

During his stint with the Jets, Fields posted a 2-7 record as a starter, throwing for seven touchdowns and just one interception, accumulating 1,259 yards. However, his performance saw some low points, including a game with just 27 passing yards against Buffalo in Week 2.

The Chiefs are in need of a seasoned backup quarterback, especially with Patrick Mahomes recovering from a knee ligament injury. Fields' move to Kansas City comes after the Jets' recent trade for Geno Smith, signaling the end of Fields' tenure in New York.

Originally drafted 11th overall by Chicago in 2021, Fields was traded to Pittsburgh in 2024. He started the season strong with the Steelers, recording five passing and five rushing touchdowns, alongside a single interception, leading Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start. However, once Russell Wilson returned from injury, Fields was sidelined.

Fields joined the Jets last offseason to replace Aaron Rodgers, but the team struggled to a 3-14 season under coach Aaron Glenn. Owner Woody Johnson attributed much of the team's difficulties to Fields' performance at quarterback.

Throughout his career, Fields holds a 16-37 record as a starter, with 9,039 passing yards, 52 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions. He has also rushed for 2,892 yards and 23 touchdowns.
