Seattle Seahawks Lock in Star Receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with Historic Deal
Seattle has secured a major win off the field, as the Seahawks and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba have agreed to a groundbreaking four-year, $168.8 million contract extension, with a whopping $120 million guaranteed. This deal, once finalized, will make Smith-Njigba the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.
At just 24 years old, Smith-Njigba has already etched his name into Seahawks history. Last season, he shattered the team's single-season records with 1,793 receiving yards and 119 receptions, earning him the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. With this new contract, he's set to remain in Seattle through the 2031 season, following the team's decision to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie deal.
This extension surpasses the previous record set by Ja'Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals, who inked a $161 million deal with $112 million guaranteed last March.
Smith-Njigba was a force to be reckoned with throughout the season, recording nine games with over 100 receiving yards. His performance was pivotal in Seattle clinching their second Super Bowl title. In the NFC Championship game against the Los Angeles Rams, he delivered an unforgettable performance with 10 receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown, leading the Seahawks to a 31-27 victory.
Throughout his career, Smith-Njigba has amassed an impressive 282 receptions for 3,551 yards and 20 touchdowns, solidifying his status as one of the league's elite receivers. This contract not only reflects his past achievements but also the bright future the Seahawks envision with him leading their receiving corps.
