The Iowa Hawkeyes are on a mission this season, aiming for an NCAA Tournament berth that seemed elusive just a year ago. With a chance to solidify their standing, Iowa heads to University Park, Pa., to face Penn State on Saturday, eyeing a crucial win.
Sitting at No. 26 in the NET rankings, Iowa (20-8, 10-7 Big Ten) has hit the 20-win milestone for the first time since the 2022-23 season. A victory over Penn State would ensure a winning record in Big Ten play, bolstering their tournament resume.
Looking ahead, the Hawkeyes have a challenging schedule with a home game against the league champion, No. 3 Michigan, and a road trip to No.
12 Nebraska. Saturday's matchup presents the clearest path to securing another win before the regular season wraps up.
"We've just got to keep getting better," said first-year coach Ben McCollum. "Try to extend your season as long as you can and if we keep improving, we can do that."
McCollum's impact has been most evident on defense. Transitioning from the high-scoring style of former coach Fran McCaffery, Iowa now boasts the stingiest defense in the Big Ten, allowing just 64.8 points per game.
Offensively, guard Bennett Stirtz has been a standout, scoring 20 or more points in 10 of Iowa's last 11 games and averaging 25.3 points during this impressive run.
On the other side, Penn State (11-17, 2-15) finds itself at the bottom of the conference standings. The Nittany Lions haven't played since their 87-64 loss at Nebraska last Saturday.
Despite the tough stretch, Penn State coach Mike Rhoades praises his team’s resilience. "I really commend these guys and their approach to a tough two months here results-wise," Rhoades said. "But the way these guys have approached things, have been coachable, the way they have come into the gym and worked, I really appreciate their approach and their effort."
Penn State's scoring is led by Freddie Dilione V and Kayden Mingo, each averaging 13.9 points. The Nittany Lions have managed just one home victory in Big Ten play, against Minnesota on Feb. 1.
As Iowa looks to strengthen its case for March Madness, Saturday’s game is a pivotal moment in their bounce-back season.
