Ex-Penn State Players' Trial Delayed: What Happened in Court?

Postponement in the trial of former Penn State football players facing serious charges raises concerns over legal proceedings and potential repercussions.

Trial of Former Penn State Players Delayed

The trial involving two former Penn State football players, Jameial J. Lyons Jr. and Kaveion A.

Keys, has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Originally scheduled for Monday, the trial was delayed after Lyons' defense attorney was hospitalized, as revealed during a pretrial hearing.

Lyons, 20, from Philadelphia, and Keys, 20, from Virginia, are facing serious charges, including the rape of a 17-year-old Penn State student in July 2024. Lyons is also accused of an additional assault on the same night. Both players were dismissed from the university and the football team by August 2024, shortly before being charged.

The incident reportedly began at an off-campus gathering where alcohol was involved. According to police, three females were present, and two became incapacitated, leaving the 17-year-old alone with Lyons and Keys. The victim recounted being forced into sexual acts and unable to resist due to the physical size of the accused.

During a preliminary hearing, the victim testified about her inability to escape and her fear of further harm. Lyons, a former defensive end, and Keys, a former linebacker, were both notably larger than the victim, which contributed to her inability to fend them off.

After the incident, police reported that Lyons carried the victim outside before dropping her. Evidence, including a video found on Keys' phone, was presented by detectives. One of the other females involved also reported an assault by Lyons.

In their defense, Keys denied any involvement with the 17-year-old, while Lyons claimed the encounter was consensual. Despite these claims, both men face multiple charges, including felony counts of rape and sexual assault, along with misdemeanors. They remain free on unsecured bail, with the trial rescheduled for June, aiming for a consolidated hearing for both defendants.
