Caleb Brewer is gearing up for his third season with the Penn State Nittany Lions, and he's making a significant shift. The redshirt sophomore is transitioning from offensive guard to defensive tackle, adding depth to a revamped defensive line.
Brewer, who hasn't yet seen game action, missed the last two Big Ten matchups in 2025. He originally joined the team in 2024 as a 6-foot-4, 288-pound freshman, later bulking up to 312 pounds before settling at 302 pounds.
The Nittany Lions' new coaching staff, led by head coach Matt Campbell, is eager to see Brewer and the rest of the defensive line in action when spring practices kick off on March 24. Campbell emphasized the importance of a strong, physical presence in the Big Ten, particularly on the interior defensive line.
Brewer's journey with Penn State began after he received a scholarship offer in January 2023, following an impressive junior season at Wyomissing High School. There, he played as a blocking tight end in a run-heavy offense. His connection to the program was strengthened by former teammate J'ven Williams, a five-star offensive lineman who initially joined Penn State's 2023 class before transferring to Charlotte.
Brewer committed to the Nittany Lions after the 2023 Blue-White Game and became a fixture at summer prospect camps, where his performance solidified the coaching staff's confidence in his potential. As a high school senior, Brewer excelled at offensive tackle, earning regional Lineman of the Year honors and showcasing his versatility by excelling on both sides of the ball and in wrestling.
After redshirting in 2024 and contributing on the scout team last year, Brewer is now under the guidance of defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe. Malloe, along with new defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn and edge rusher coach Christian Smith from Northwestern, brings a wealth of experience to the defensive front.
Campbell highlighted the impact of hiring Malloe and Smith, noting their expertise in developing a formidable defensive line. With Brewer's transition and the new coaching dynamics, the Nittany Lions aim to strengthen their defensive presence and make a mark in the Big Ten.
