Big Ten School Offers Free Tuition For Watching Football Game

UMD's creative tuition raffle aims to energize the crowd and boost attendance as the Terrapins face off against Illinois.

One University of Maryland student is set to leave College Park with a major prize on Saturday: free tuition for the Spring 2027 Semester, provided they stay for the full game against Illinois.

The university said the giveaway is part of an effort to keep students in the stands through the fourth quarter. Rachel Palmer, the assistant athletic director for fan development and marketing at UMD, said the idea came together over the summer.

"The idea actually started over the summer, so a bunch of us got together to brainstorm ideas of how we can get students to stay until the fourth quarter of our football games," said Rachel Palmer, the assistant athletic director for fan development and marketing at UMD. "We've tried a lot of things over the years, raffling off premium giveaways, contests and ultimately landed on this idea of a tuition raffle."

To be eligible, students need to claim their student ticket and scan it at the gate. During the game, a QR code will appear on the videoboard for students to scan and enter. From there, five finalists will be randomly chosen and taken to the field in the fourth quarter, where one will win the tuition prize.

The award is valued at roughly up to $8,000, based on the cost of undergraduate in-state tuition, according to university officials. Maryland said it will honor that amount no matter the student’s residency status.

The raffle is tied to a loaded gameday atmosphere beyond the football itself. Palmer said it will be the program’s second annual Oktoberfest game, with German-inspired touches including hats for fans, Oktoberfest beer specials and souvenir cups. Since the matchup also lands on Halloween, Maryland is layering in another theme with trick-or-treating at the fan fest before the game and costume contests.

Students around campus sounded open to the extra motivation.

"You best believe I'll be staying at the game the whole time, hello, I want that free tuition," said UMD Freshman, Allison Reinhart. "(Our football team isn't) the best and we've had a rough few games and so I think they're really trying to pursue us to stay."

"I actually wasn't planning on going to the game, but I guess now I am," said Obi Mortanya, a freshman at UMD. "Well, we're not really that good so there's not a big reason to stay but I guess that's incentive."

Maryland enters the game 2-5 and hasn’t won since Sept. 12. Kickoff is set for noon on Saturday, October 31.

Penn State May Have Finally Fixed One Defensive Problem

Penn State has spent much of the season shuffling pieces on defense, and the latest adjustment points to how much the staff is still trying to settle the middle of the unit. Head coach Matt Campbell said Marcus Neal Jr. has been moved from safety to off-ball linebacker, a move intended to add depth after injuries and some uneven play have thinned that group. It is the kind of in-season switch that can say as much about necessity as it does about development.

Zion Tracy is going the other direction, sliding to safety in an effort to steady that spot and give the defense a more workable rotation. The changes underscore how fluid Penn States personnel plan has been as the season has unfolded, with the staff continuing to tweak both roles and scheme to find a combination that holds up better week to week. Penn State Gets An Early Heavyweight Test Cael Sanderson Needed

The early-season calendar is giving Cael Sanderson exactly the kind of measuring stick he wants, with the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic set for Nov. 24 at Rec Hall. Penn State will put several of its biggest names on the mat in the showcase, including NCAA champion Josh Barr, national runners-up Shayne Van Ness and Rocco Welsh, and heavyweight Connor Mirasola.

For Sanderson, the appeal goes beyond the marquee matchups. The exhibition offers a useful first look at how Penn State stacks up in a live setting, especially at heavyweight, where Mirasola is slated to meet Wisconsins Braxton Amos. It is the sort of early test that can help clarify lineup decisions before the grind of the season really begins. [Read more 🡒]

Penn State's Quarterback Search Just Got More Pressing For Matt Campbell

Penn States quarterback pursuit in the 2027 class just got a little more complicated during the Week 8 bye, when Matt Campbell and his staff tried to make a late push for Braylen Warren. The four-star quarterback has been on Missouris board for a while, and the Tigers have been his commitment since December 2025, leaving Penn State to keep searching for a long-term answer under center.

The urgency is easy to see from Penn States side. The Nittany Lions still do not have a committed quarterback in the 2027 class after Will Wood decommitted, and Warren would have represented a major addition with the kind of production that made him such a sought-after prospect. Instead, Penn State is back in the market, and the next move in that search will matter plenty for a program still trying to lock down its future at the most important position on the field.
