Alan Huss Returns To Creighton With Surprise Coaching Twist

Creighton alumnus and former assistant Alan Huss steps up as head coach, bringing strategic continuity and fresh defensive tactics after Greg McDermott's retirement.

In Omaha, a new chapter is unfolding for Creighton basketball as Alan Huss steps into the spotlight as the head coach. A familiar face to Bluejays fans, Huss played for Creighton from 1997 to 2001 and spent six years as an assistant under the legendary Greg McDermott. Now, with McDermott's retirement on the horizon, Huss is ready to take the helm.

Huss’s journey back to Omaha came after a successful stint at High Point, where he made a name for himself by leading the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. McDermott's recommendation to make Huss the coach-in-waiting was a nod to his potential to continue Creighton’s legacy in the Big East.

As the Bluejays gear up for the College Basketball Crown tournament, starting with a clash against Rutgers in Las Vegas on April 2, Huss is set to carry forward the "Let It Fly" offense that has become synonymous with Creighton’s high-octane style. Known for its fast pace and reliance on 3-point shooting, this offense has been a cornerstone of the program’s success.

“We’re not changing what works,” Huss emphasized. “Our brand of basketball is about sharing the ball and playing at a tempo that keeps opponents on their toes.”

Defensively, Huss plans to crank up the pressure, adding a more disruptive element to the Bluejays' game. With a smile, he quipped, “If it works, that’s all me. If not, well, we’ll say it was Mac’s idea.”

The decision to pass the torch to Huss was an easy one for athletic director Marcus Blossom and school president Rev. Daniel Hendrickson. Blossom highlighted the seamless transition, saying, “Mac’s insight was invaluable, and Al’s name was always at the top of our list.”

This season has been a rollercoaster for Creighton, marked by injuries and off-court challenges. Huss acknowledged the struggles but remains optimistic. “We’ve had our ups and downs, but we’re ready to find our joy again,” he said.

As Creighton prepares for the next phase, fans can look forward to a blend of continuity and innovation under Huss's leadership. The future looks bright for the Bluejays, with a coach who’s deeply connected to the program’s past and eager to shape its future.
