Why Senators Chose Thomas Chabot For Their New Era

The Ottawa Senators solidify their leadership by appointing veteran defenseman Thomas Chabot as the new captain, bringing stability and experience to the team amid recent upheaval.

The Ottawa Senators didn’t rush the biggest leadership call of their offseason. They let it sit, and in the end they landed on the player who had already been carrying himself like a captain for years.

Thomas Chabot is now the 11th captain in franchise history, a move that became official Tuesday after Brady Tkachuk asked for and was granted a trade to the Florida Panthers, leaving the role open all summer. Chabot, Ottawa’s first-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, had already been wearing an alternate captain’s “A,” and he’ll step into the spotlight for real Saturday when the Senators open the 2026-27 season against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Head coach Travis Green said the organization spent time working through the decision before settling on Chabot, and the more they watched, the clearer it became.

“First of all, I think it’s a really good decision. We took our time making it a little bit.

I think as time went on, we were pretty set in Chabby being the guy. Obviously, he was one of the guys we were thinking about all summer, And they were awaiting a new baby.

So that kind of delayed things a little bit.

“I’m really happy for Chabby. He’s been a leader here for a while and grown into probably a better leader now that he’s been here for - it’s not just the length, but what he’s gone through here, growing as a player himself and watching the team grow and struggle and then hopefully turn in the corner.

“The last two years we’ve had pretty good seasons, made the playoffs, haven’t gone the way we’ve wanted. But he’s going to be a great captain for us. He loves his teammates.

“One thing I didn’t know about Chabby was that he’s a warrior. He plays through a lot of injuries that I have never seen guys play through.

And he sacrifices for the team. He loves the city, so it was an easy choice.”

Chabot now joins a line of Ottawa leaders that includes Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson, and the Senators will hand him the “C” as they move into a new era without Tkachuk at the top of the roster.

Senators Suddenly Have A Top-Six Problem Right Before Opening Night

Andre Burakovsky was supposed to help stabilize Ottawas top six heading into the season, but that plan has taken an immediate hit. The winger went down with an upper-body injury in a preseason game against Montreal and has not been back on the ice since, leaving the Senators with one fewer established option as opening night approaches.

Head coach Travis Green has already indicated Burakovsky is unlikely to be ready for the regular-season opener, and the timing is what makes this so tricky for Ottawa. Opening-night line combinations are still being sorted out, and a player who was expected to claim a meaningful top-six role is now battling against the clock while the Senators wait for clarity on his return. Marchenkos Toronto Debut Already Carries Pressure Ottawa Fans Will Notice

Kirill Marchenkos first night with the Toronto Maple Leafs came fast, with the winger stepping into the lineup for the home opener after being traded and jumping straight into a new environment. He still managed to make an immediate impression, picking up an assist and putting multiple shots on goal while lining up on the left side, a notable change from the right wing role he has usually occupied.

For Ottawa fans watching a division rival add another dangerous forward, the quick debut only adds to the sense that Toronto is trying to squeeze value from the move right away. Marchenko and his agent Dan Milstein have framed the transition as a motivator, and Leafs coach Jim Hiller said the new arrival is already working through the adjustment, leaving the next step of his fit in Toronto as the part everyone will keep an eye on. Senators Face One Huge Question As Their New-Look Season Begins

Ottawas new-look season comes with the usual opening-night optimism, but also a lot of moving parts that could shape the club long before the calendar turns. The additions and lineup tweaks have given the Senators a different feel, with William Eklund arriving over the summer to bring more punch to the forward group, while the goaltending tandem of Linus Ullmark and Samuel Ersson is expected to give the team a sturdier base than it has had in recent years.

The bigger question, though, sits deeper in the roster construction and speaks to how Ottawa wants to balance present needs with longer-term value. Ridly Greig is already drawing attention as a potential trade chip, especially with a fourth-line role and a suspension leaving his start to the season complicated, and how the Senators handle that situation could say plenty about their priorities as they try to make this reshaped roster work.
