The Ottawa Senators addressed a sudden hole in their crease Friday night, landing goalie Jonas Johansson from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal for future considerations.
The move came after Ottawa lost Leevi Merilainen to waivers on Friday, with the Vancouver Canucks claiming him after the Senators had placed him on waivers Thursday. That left the club thin on goaltending depth behind veteran starter Linus Ullmark, and Johansson gives them another option right away.
Johansson, 31, has spent the last three seasons backing up Andrei Vasilevskiy in Tampa Bay. The workload has been limited, but his numbers have stayed below league average over that stretch, with save percentages of .890, .895 and .884 in the past three years.
Across his NHL career, Johansson has posted a 43-36-14 record with a .888 save percentage, a 3.30 goals-against average and four shutouts.
Ottawa’s search for help in goal makes sense after last season’s struggles. Ullmark and Merilainen both had rough regular seasons, even if the Senators won most of the games Ullmark started. Ullmark finished with a .891 save percentage and a 2.73 goals-against average, figures that fell well short of his usual standard.
Merilainen had an even tougher year in the NHL, going 8-10-1 with a .860 save percentage and a 3.51 goals-against average. Still, the 24-year-old showed some promise in Belleville, where he put up a .909 save percentage with Ottawa’s AHL affiliate.
That uneven play pushed general manager Steve Staios to add another body to the mix this summer. He already brought in Samuel Ersson from the Philadelphia Flyers to back up Ullmark, and Johansson now joins the competition for minutes behind Ottawa’s No. 1.
