The Ottawa Senators’ injury problems took another hit Tuesday night, and this one could push the organization into action.
Forward Warren Foegele exited the game against Vegas with a knee injury after absorbing a hit along the boards from Jeremy Lauzon. Lauzon received a two-minute minor on the play, but the bigger fallout may be what it means for Ottawa’s roster going forward.
There has been no official update yet on how severe Foegele’s injury is, but according to Sens insider Bruce Garrioch, the Senators may need to make a roster move just to keep things moving on their trip.
“The Senators will likely have to recall a forward from their American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville as their trip continues Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena.”
That much feels straightforward enough. The tougher part is what comes next. Garrioch also floated the possibility that Ottawa could explore the trade market, though that’s hardly a simple fix.
“They need a player who can fit into the top nine and contribute offensively by putting the puck in the net.”
That kind of player is in demand across the league, and that makes any deal expensive. Even if the Senators find someone available, it’s not the kind of move that comes cheap.
For now, Ottawa may simply have to weather another absence and keep digging for answers. There isn’t exactly a flood of teams ready to unload useful forwards, though clubs such as the Vancouver Canucks and Pittsburgh Penguins could be worth watching if they decide to go in another direction this season. The Penguins, in particular, have been linked to Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell, but Pittsburgh won’t be taking two seventh-round picks for either one.
That’s the wrinkle for Steve Staios and the front office. Finding a player who is anywhere close to Foegele, or even close to William Eklund, is no easy task. And if the injuries keep piling up and the Senators start slipping, Staios may be forced to look for something more lasting.
Before any of that, Ottawa heads to Los Angeles. A win there would at least help ease some of the pressure hanging over the club, which makes Thursday’s game a significant one for the Senators.

Senators Scoring Problem Is Testing Steve Staios Early
The Senators early scoring issues have put Steve Staios in an awkward spot, with Ottawa sitting 21st in goals per game and few easy fixes available from within. Injuries have thinned the forward group, and the organization is already looking at ways to add more punch before the problem lingers too long into the season.
Staios has reportedly started checking the market for help, but the combination of cap pressure and how early it still is makes a meaningful deal harder to pull off right away. One name said to be in the mix is Chicago forward Teuvo Teravainen, though Ottawas options remain limited while it waits for injured players to work their way back. [Read more 🡒]
Senators' Injury Crunch Is Putting Andre Burakovsky On The Spot
Ottawas strong start has given the Senators a little breathing room, but the injury pileup around the lineup is starting to demand more from the players still available. Andre Burakovsky is right in the middle of that squeeze, with the veteran forward still searching for his first point and trying to re-establish himself in a role that has not been steady enough for him to settle in.
The bigger concern is what comes next if the offense does not follow. Ottawa is going to need useful minutes from every available body, and Burakovsky is the kind of player whose spot can become vulnerable when production lags behind the teams needs. If the Senators keep looking for ways to open room for others, the pressure on his place in the lineup is only going to grow. [Read more 🡒]
Senators Roster Shift Just Got More Complicated At The Worst Time
The Senators are trying to stabilize their blue line at a time when the margins are getting thinner elsewhere. Thomas Chabot is set to return against the Los Angeles Kings, which should give Ottawa a more complete defensive look, and that comes after a roster move that already trimmed some of the depth in the system.
Cameron Crotty, who had been available on waivers, is no longer an option for Ottawa after another team stepped in. At the same time, the Senators are bracing for a longer absence up front after a knee-on-knee injury against Vegas, a setback that adds even more strain to a roster already dealing with shifting availability.
