Senators Rough Night Just Became A Bigger Goalie Problem

San Jose Sharks claim their first regulation victory of the season with a commanding win over the Ottawa Senators, showcasing offensive strength and solid goaltending.

OTTAWA - The San Jose Sharks finally got what they’d been chasing Thursday night: their first regulation win of the season, a 6-2 result over the Ottawa Senators.

Colin Graf set the tone for San Jose with a goal and an assist, while Nolan Allan, Tyler Toffoli, Jacob Trouba, Zack Ostapchuk and Ivar Stenberg each found the net as the Sharks moved to 6-4-1.

Yaroslav Askarov was sharp behind them, turning aside 39 shots to help keep Ottawa from ever fully getting back into the game.

The Senators got goals from Tim Stutzle and Jordan Spence and finished at 7-4-0. Samuel Ersson made 23 saves but is still looking for his first win with Ottawa.

Ottawa’s night got tougher before puck drop, too, after the club placed Linus Ullmark on injured reserve Thursday following a lower-body injury he suffered a night earlier.

San Jose seized control in the second period when Toffoli broke a 1-1 tie at the halfway mark, sneaking a shot through traffic from the point on the power play.

Spence pulled Ottawa within two early in the third, scoring at 6:24 to make it 3-2 and briefly give the Senators some life.

But when Ottawa pulled Ersson on the power play with under four minutes left, the Sharks slammed the door. Ostapchuk scored into the empty net after a giveaway, and Stenberg added another empty-netter to finish it off.

The Senators, the report said, did not bring the same intensity they showed Wednesday against the Panthers and couldn’t finish enough of their chances.

For the Sharks, it was the kind of road performance teams build on: steady, opportunistic, and ruthless when the opening appeared.

Ottawa hosts the New York Rangers on Saturday, while San Jose heads to Boston to face the Bruins.

Ottawa Fans Have A 67s Breakout Worth Watching Closely

The 67s have turned an opening-night setback into a fast start, running unbeaten through their last six and climbing to a 7-1-2 record. What has made the surge especially notable is the way the offense has come together around Spencer Bowes and Filip Ekberg, with Bowes providing the finishing touch while the two have found real chemistry as the season settles in.

There is more behind the record than just scoring, too. Ottawa has gotten steady goaltending from Jaeden Nelson and rookie Noah LaGambina, along with dependable work on the back end and a penalty kill that has pushed the club into the upper tier nationally. For Senators fans following the organizations development pipeline, the 67s are giving them plenty to track beyond the box score. [Read more 🡒]

Senators Waste Chance To Build Momentum In Frustrating Sharks Loss

A chance to keep building momentum slipped away in San Jose, where Ottawa came up on the wrong end of a 6-2 result despite spending long stretches in the offensive zone. The Senators finished with a 41-26 edge in shots and got goals from Tim Stutzle and Jordan Spence, but the scoreboard never reflected how much time they spent pressing. Instead, the Sharks found timely answers and got the kind of goaltending they had been waiting for from Yaroslav Askarov, whose saves repeatedly kept Ottawa from flipping the game.

For the Senators, the frustrating part was not just the final margin but how many openings went unclaimed. San Jose picked up its first regulation win of the season, while Ottawa was left to wonder how a night with that much puck possession still turned into a lopsided loss. It was the sort of game that can linger, especially for a team looking to turn decent play into actual points. [Read more 🡒]

Jalen Chatfields Future Is Becoming A Real Hurricanes Concern

The Hurricanes still have some business to sort out on the blue line, and the latest sign is not an encouraging one. Jalen Chatfield and Carolina did not reach an agreement on a contract extension, and there have been no further talks, which puts the steady defenseman on a path toward free agency unless something changes quickly. For a team that has leaned on his reliability, the lack of movement makes this a situation worth watching closely as the offseason picture takes shape.

Meanwhile, the NHLs Department of Player Safety issued fines after a physical game between Ottawa and Florida, with Senators forward Nick Cousins and Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk both getting hit with the maximum amounts allowed. The penalties underscore how heated that matchup became, and Ottawa fans will be keeping an eye on whether the leagues response leads to any further fallout. [Read more 🡒]
