Adam Nemec’s path to the NHL Draft had a little bit of everything: a winter in Sudbury, a summer back home in Slovakia, and one unexpected stop inside Canadian Tire Centre that made the whole thing feel a lot more real.
The Ottawa Senators’ third-round pick only got to North America in January, after spending the first half of the 2025-26 season with Nitra MHC in his native Slovakia. Since then, his time on this side of the pond has been split between hockey and homecoming trips, which means he hasn’t had much chance to explore Canada. But he did end up at one NHL arena, and the timing was almost too perfect.
When the Sudbury Wolves were in Ottawa for a late-January game against the Ottawa 67’s, Nemec got a bonus look at the big stage. The Wolves had bought tickets for their players to watch the Saturday night matchup, and that happened to be the same night the Senators hosted the New Jersey Devils - and Nemec’s older brother, Šimon, was in the lineup. Ottawa beat New Jersey 4-1, and after the game, the Wolves players were able to see the Senators’ locker room and facilities.
Six months later, Ottawa called Nemec’s name at the NHL Draft.
“It was great to see the locker room, and now it’s reality,” said Nemec after he took morning skate on Saturday morning at Centre Slush Puppie, ahead of a 6 p.m. Prospect Challenge game against Toronto.
Nemec may be new to NHL buildings, but he’s already familiar with the kind of preparation that comes with being around a pro. He and his brother train together in Slovakia during the offseason, and that has clearly left a mark on the younger Nemec’s game.
“Yeah, I think it helps a lot. Like to see an NHL player on-ice and off the ice, and he's a professional both ways, so that helped me a lot to grow my game,” said Nemec.
This summer, he came back to Sudbury to get ready for Wolves training camp. Another Slovak, Jan Chovan, shares a billet family with him, and that setup made the move to Canada much easier. The billet mom even made the trip to Slovakia this summer to visit the two players.
“Yeah, it's super crazy to be with [Chovan] there,” said Nemec. “That helped me a lot when I came there last year, and it's been crazy. We’ve got good chemistry on and off the ice, so that’s good.”
After rookie camp, Nemec will head back to Sudbury and begin his first full OHL season. He’s coming off a 14-goal, 35-point effort in 31 games and will try to build from there.
And away from the rink, he and Chovan have been making the most of their time together. Their billet brother showed them the local golf courses last week, and Nemec liked what he saw.
“It was actually my first time last week, and I think it’s pretty fun,” said Nemec. “I might go a little bit more.”
