Regina Pat Canadians Stun Playoffs With Mystery Lineup Strategy

Despite juggling unpredictable lineups, the Regina Pat Canadians are dominating the playoffs, showcasing their depth and resilience.

The Regina Pat Canadians are on a roll, having just secured a commanding 7-2 victory over the Estevan Bears in the Saskatchewan Male U-18 AAA Hockey League playoffs. This win not only swept the series but also highlighted the impact of key players like Schultz and Pue, even when they're not on the ice. Defender Ryker Doka, who scored in the game, emphasized the team's close-knit spirit and relentless work ethic, a sentiment that resonates throughout the squad.

Having topped the regular-season standings for the second consecutive year, the Pat C’s are no strangers to success. Last year, they clinched the league title and went on to win the Canadian under-18 championship. Their journey this season has been equally impressive, as they dispatched the Saskatoon Contacts in their opening series and now advance to the championship series.

Head coach Ryan Hodgins knows the grind of the playoffs all too well. "There are gonna be peaks and valleys," he said, reflecting on the team's resilience after conceding the first goal against Estevan before rattling off seven straight. Embracing the physical and mental challenges is key, and Hodgins believes those who do so will thrive.

Schultz and Pue, both standout talents, have been pivotal despite limited appearances due to their age. Schultz, last year's national tournament MVP, was drafted first overall by the Regina Pats, while Pue followed closely as the third pick. Their contributions to the Pat Canadians have been significant, with Schultz netting 30 goals and 30 assists, and Pue adding 16 goals and 32 assists in the regular season.

Neither played in the recent game, as they were also absent from the Pats’ matchup against the Prince Albert Raiders, where the Pats fell short in a shootout. The Pats, dealing with injuries, rested several players in anticipation of securing a playoff spot, which remains within reach.

Pats head coach Brad Herauf is mindful of managing player workload, especially with young talents like Schultz and Pue. Their availability for the Pats in the postseason is crucial, but so is their contribution to the Pat Canadians' quest for back-to-back national titles. "These kids are playing a ton of hockey," Herauf noted, highlighting the balance needed to ensure their well-being.

Even without Schultz and Pue, the Pat Canadians boast a formidable lineup. Rookie Malaki Martin and veteran Nathan Gardiner have been standout performers, leading the team in points alongside defenders Ethan Young and Ryker Doka.

As they await their opponent for the league championship, the Pat C’s have outscored their playoff rivals 33-14, showcasing their offensive prowess. The Moose Jaw Warriors, last year’s runners-up, are currently leading their series against the Saskatoon Blazers, with both finalists set to advance to the Telus Cup west playoff in Regina.

The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in the Pat Canadians' storied journey, with their eyes firmly on the prize.
