The Ottawa Senators’ blue line might have taken a very different path if Bowen Byram had somehow ended up in their hands.
That idea starts with the 2019 NHL Draft, when Colorado used the fourth-overall pick on Byram. The twist is that the Avalanche only had that selection because of the Matt Duchene trade.
Ottawa acquired Duchene in 2017, sending Kyle Turris to Nashville and setting off a chain reaction that eventually put a conditional 2019 first-round pick in Colorado’s pocket. That pick became No. 4, and Byram was the prize.
So if you rewind the whole thing and pretend the Duchene deal never happened, the Senators could have been sitting there with the same fourth-overall slot in 2019. In that version of events, Byram could have been theirs.
And if that had happened, Ottawa’s defense would have looked a lot more intimidating. A group featuring Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot and Byram is the kind of blue line that changes the conversation fast.
That leads to the next question: if the Senators had Byram, would they still have taken Sanderson?
Ottawa grabbed Sanderson in 2020, securing what looks like a franchise defenseman. The club also selected Tim Stutzle third overall, which set up the question at No. 5: if Byram were already in the organization, would the Senators still have leaned defense and taken Sanderson, or would they have chased another forward such as Alexander Holtz, who went seventh, or Jack Quinn, who went eighth?
The safest answer is that Ottawa still would have gone with the best player available and picked Sanderson anyway.
But there’s another path to consider: the Senators might have taken a forward at No. 5 and then used their third first-round pick on a defenseman instead.
Ottawa did take Ridly Greig with the 28th pick in 2020, and in hindsight, that draft worked out well for the Senators. Still, it’s hard not to look back at the Duchene trade and wonder how much different the entire roster - especially the blue line - might have been if that deal had never happened.
