In a thrilling 5-4 victory over the New Jersey Devils, Ryan Huska, head coach of the Flames, couldn't hold back his admiration for Beecher's performance. After missing several games, Beecher returned to the ice, delivering what Huska described as perhaps his finest game of the season.
Beecher's journey this year has been anything but smooth. He began with the Boston Bruins, often watching from the sidelines until mid-November, when he was waived and picked up by the Flames.
He managed to get 19 games under his belt before an early January injury sidelined him. Factoring in the Olympic break, Beecher found himself out for nearly two months.
Thursday night marked his first goal for the Flames.
While the Flames might not have much at stake in the standings, these final games are crucial for Beecher, who faces restricted free agency at season's end. "Personally, it’s about just trying to get to my game," Beecher shared last week. "It’s been a weird year, but hopefully I can start stringing some games together and get some confidence back and keep it rolling."
At 25, Beecher is entering what should be his prime years, but competition for the center position is fierce. The Flames have recently bolstered their lineup by signing college free-agent center Tyson Gross, acquiring Andrew Castagna in a trade, and picking up Max Curran. Plus, their last draft focused heavily on centers.
Though Beecher might not be a future 30-goal scorer, his game against the Devils showcased his defensive prowess and penalty-killing skills, even snagging a short-handed goal. For someone whose season has been disrupted by team changes and injuries, this performance must have been a welcome relief.
Reflecting on his tumultuous season, Beecher mentioned, "It’s just been a weird year. It kind of worked out well with being able to rehab and have a week or two off for the Olympics to get away mentally and just re-set before the final stretch.
Obviously, nobody wants to get hurt. It’s tough to be on the sidelines watching the boys.
It’s exciting to be back."
Beecher’s resilience and determination were on full display, offering a glimpse of his potential impact as the Flames look to the future.
