Senators fans are back in familiar territory, watching Jake Sanderson’s status with the kind of nervous patience that has become a running theme since camp opened in mid-September.
The star defenceman has been working through a lingering undisclosed injury all the way through training camp, the preseason and now the regular season. That uncertainty started to build when Sanderson did not skate before Ottawa’s preseason split-squad game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on September 23. Head coach Travis Green kept things vague and didn’t treat it like a major concern, the way teams often do with veteran maintenance days in the preseason.
Sanderson did get into one preseason game against the Montreal Canadiens on September 26, and for a brief stretch he looked like himself. He had two shots, two hits and an assist before leaving after 13:22 of ice time.
Green later said the move was purely precautionary and said he did not expect Sanderson to miss any time once the regular season began. But when Green also clarified that the issue behind Sanderson leaving the Montreal game was separate from the earlier undisclosed injury, the situation started to look more complicated than a simple maintenance day.
That made Sanderson’s appearance in the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs a bit of a surprise, especially after he had missed some practices leading into the regular season. He flashed the skating and puck-moving that make him such an important piece of Ottawa’s blue line, but the night didn’t last long.
Sanderson logged just six shifts and 4:29 of ice time in the first period, then sat on the bench for the final minutes of the frame. He showed frustration there, and then did not return for the rest of the game for an undisclosed reason.

Not good. Ottawa dealt with so many key injuries last season, and are right back to it in game one. pic.twitter.com/jq2EcgaVEn

Sanderson is a huge part of what gives Ottawa confidence on the back end, and he was one of the main reasons the Senators were among the league’s better defensive teams last season. That’s why this keeps landing so hard for the organization. Ottawa already spent much of last season juggling injuries on defense, and if this turns into a long-term absence, that’s a problem the Senators can’t afford to relive.

Senators Statement Win Over Leafs Came With One Immediate Concern
Thomas Chabots first night wearing the captains letter gave the Senators exactly the kind of lift they were looking for in a rivalry game. He scored and added an assist as Ottawa edged the Maple Leafs 3-2, a statement win that offered plenty for the home side to feel good about after a tight, physical meeting with Toronto.
But the celebration came with an immediate concern for Ottawas blue line. Jake Sanderson left early after re-aggravating a lower-body injury, an unwelcome turn in a game that otherwise had the look of an encouraging reset for the Senators. Travis Green was left to sort through both the positives of the performance and the uncertainty surrounding one of his key defensemen. [Read more 🡒]
Jake Sanderson Injury Clouds Senators Season Opener
Jake Sandersons night ended early in Ottawas season opener, a frustrating development for a Senators blue line that has leaned heavily on the 23-year-old since he broke into the league. The defenseman is in the third season of his eight-year contract with the club, and any interruption to his availability matters for a team trying to set a steadier tone from the opening game on.
Sanderson left after an awkward collision along the boards in the first period and the Senators later confirmed he would not return. The sequence offered an immediate jolt to an opener that was already carrying plenty of emotion, and it leaves Ottawa waiting to see how quickly it can get one of its most important young pieces back on the ice. Jake Sanderson's Early Exit Raises A Bigger Senators Concern
Jake Sandersons night in the Senators regular season opener ended much earlier than anyone around the club wanted to see. After dealing with undisclosed injuries that kept him out of practices and limited him in the preseason, the young defenseman left the game and did not return, adding an immediate layer of concern to a season that was just getting started.
The bigger issue now is the uncertainty around what happened and what it means going forward. Ottawa has not said whether the latest setback is connected to the earlier injuries that already disrupted his camp, and until theres more clarity, Sandersons status looms as one of the first important health questions facing the Senators.
