Mark Stone hit a scoring milestone on Wednesday night, but the moment that really defined his night had nothing to do with the 400 points he reached for the Vegas Golden Knights.
Stone posted a goal and an assist in a 6-2 win over the Seattle Kraken, reaching 400 points in a Vegas uniform. For Senators fans who still keep a soft spot for the former Ottawa star, it’s another reminder of how long he’s been gone - and how much he’s piled up since leaving.
But in the Vegas room, the milestone took a back seat. The attention instead went to Stone’s fight, the kind of rare, old-school moment that completed a Gordie Howe hat trick and drew praise from teammates and coach alike.
The scrap came after teammate Victor Olofsson left the game following a cross-check into the boards from behind by Ben Meyers. Meyers was ejected for the hit, and the tension carried over from there. Stone said the exchange with Seattle’s Brandon Montour pushed things further.
"(Montour) had gone on to say some things about our team that I didn't like," Stone said. "I'm not gonna fight during too many five-on-threes. But I just didn't like some of the things he was saying about our team, and that's what led to it."
It was just the seventh fight of Stone’s NHL career, making the 35-year-old captain’s decision to drop the gloves even more notable. His line for the night ended up as a goal, an assist and a fight - the classic Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
Vegas head coach Ryan Craig praised the way Stone handled it.
"That's part of the reason he wears the letter he wears on his chest," Craig told reporters after the game. "He stepped up to the challenge there and answered the bell, and you can see the reaction from our group."
" It helps solidify the togetherness of our group," Craig said. "Sticking together, standing up for each other. That's just kind of the way the game went today, but good teams do that."
Jack Eichel echoed that sentiment.
"He's our leader as far as the group goes," Eichel said. "Tons of credit to Stoney. We love seeing that."
Stone said the moment was about more than one player’s stat line.
"This is a close team," Stone said. "There's a reason why we have success.
It's not just because we have good players. It's because we stick together."

Senators Home Opener Will Honor A Beloved Figure Fans Never Forgot
The Senators home opener on Thursday night will carry an emotional weight beyond the usual opening-night buzz, as the club prepares to honor Ray Emery, one of the most memorable figures from a pivotal era in franchise history. Emery was the starting goalie during Ottawas run to the 2006-07 Stanley Cup Final, the teams only modern-era trip that deep into the playoffs, and his presence still resonates with fans who watched that group come within reach of the sports biggest stage.
Before the puck drops against the Philadelphia Flyers, Emerys family will take part in the ceremonial bell ringing, a fitting tribute for a player who died eight years ago but never really left the conversation among Senators supporters. For a building about to welcome back hockey with all the usual pageantry, it is a reminder that some of the strongest connections in Ottawa are built not just on wins and losses, but on the people who helped define a generation of the team. Flyers Just Lost A Possible Break In Thursday's Matchup
Linus Ullmarks absence from the Senators net lasted only briefly, with head coach Travis Green saying the goaltender is set to return for Ottawas upcoming game against the Flyers. Its a welcome development for a club that has leaned on Ullmark as part of its early-season stability, especially after he exited a previous game because of injury and sat out just one contest before getting back on the ice.
Ullmark is in his third season with Ottawa and is playing under a four-year contract extension, so any health update draws attention well beyond one matchup. For the Flyers, it removes a potential break in a Thursday night game that could have opened the door to a different look in goal, and it leaves Ottawa with its preferred option back in place when the teams meet. Linus Ullmark Gives Senators Home Opener A Massive Lift
Linus Ullmark was back on the ice for the Ottawa Senators morning skate Thursday and looked set to give them a major boost in the home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers. After sitting out as a precaution in his previous appearance, the veteran goalies return matters for a team that wants a steadier start in front of its own crowd and a clean first impression at home.
There was still some uncertainty elsewhere on the roster, though, with Artem Zub and Andre Burakovsky taking part in the skate without yet being cleared to play. For Ottawa, the early-season picture is encouraging enough to feel better about its crease, even if a couple of lineup questions remain before puck drop. [Read more 🡒]
