The Calgary Flames are bringing back a familiar look for the 2026-27 NHL season, and for Mikael Backlund it comes with a personal twist. The team’s new third jersey is a throwback to the 2004 run to the Stanley Cup Final, and Backlund has been connected to that design almost from the start of his time with the organization.
Backlund still remembers putting on one of those jerseys on draft day in the summer of 2007, and now, 19 years later, the Flames captain is still around to see his own early memories turned into a retro uniform. At 37, he couldn’t help but joke about the era the sweater brings back.
“Maybe,” the 37-year-old said with a chuckle, “I should get some white skates and some frosted tips again.”
Calgary showed off the red ’04 jersey during Tuesday’s pre-season win over the Vancouver Canucks. The club says the alternate will be worn four times at the Saddledome, once against each opponent from that memorable 2004 playoff run: the Canucks, the Detroit Red Wings, the San Jose Sharks and the Tampa Bay Lightning. The first retro night is set for Oct. 24 against Detroit.
For Flames fans, the look is tied to the Red Mile, the packed streets and a team that came within one win of the Stanley Cup. Backlund said the return of the jersey brought back exactly the kind of memories the team wanted it to.
“I thought it was cool that they brought back that jersey and brought back some good memories for the city,” Backlund said. “Watching highlights and seeing clips of the city of Calgary, it’s really cool to see all the fans celebrating and all the big moments they had during that run.”
The jersey release also lands in Calgary’s farewell season at the Saddledome, a final year that is already shaping up as a long look back. Backlund has spent enough time there to have more than a few memories of his own.
“It’s a special year for everyone here in Calgary, every hockey fan in the city,” Backlund said. “People have different memories and look back at things that happened in the building, good and bad.”
