Drake Batherson’s future in Ottawa is suddenly one of the bigger contract questions facing the Senators.
Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen reports that there is still a “Gap remains wide” between Batherson’s camp and the Senators as the two sides work through extension talks for the 28-year-old winger.
Batherson is entering the final season of the six-year deal he signed with Ottawa in September 2021, back when Pierre Dorion was still running the front office. That contract, his second in the NHL, carries an average annual value of $4.975 million.
The hesitation makes sense from a pure market standpoint because Batherson has long outplayed that number. He has hit the 60-point mark in each of the past four seasons, and this past year was his best yet. In 79 games during the 2025-26 regular season, the Fort Wayne, Ind. native put up 33 goals and 38 assists for 71 points, finishing as Ottawa’s leading scorer.
He was also the only Senator to clear 60 points last season, topping Dylan Cozens, Jake Sanderson and captain Brady Tkachuk. Batherson’s production helped steady the club after a slow start and pushed Ottawa to fifth in the Atlantic Division and into the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.
His playoff numbers were solid too, with three goals and four points in the first round, though the Senators were swept by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
Batherson’s next contract has become a major talking point because of where the cap is headed. With the salary cap set to rise to $104 million next season and potentially $113.5 million in 2027-28, some around the market are wondering whether his next deal could reach double digits. Garrioch reported that Batherson wants to remain in Ottawa for the foreseeable future, but it remains to be seen whether the Senators are willing to wait until later in the year to get something done.
Through 470 regular-season NHL games, Batherson has 149 goals and 215 assists for 364 points, along with six points in 10 postseason games. Ottawa selected him in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft.
