The Orlando Magic’s best path to the 2027 NBA All-Star Game looks pretty straightforward: Paolo Banchero is the safest bet, with Franz Wagner lurking right behind him and Desmond Bane offering a more aggressive dark-horse case.
Banchero is the obvious starting point. He is the centerpiece of Orlando’s core, and the expectation is that a new offensive system under Sean Sweeney could help him unlock even more.
The fit matters, too, because the players around him should make life easier rather than harder. Banchero already flashed what that ceiling can look like in the playoffs, averaging 26.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists across seven games against Detroit in round one last year.
Those are the kinds of numbers that can carry over into a regular season if everything clicks.
That’s why he is being viewed as the engine and X-factor in Orlando. If Sweeney and Banchero build real chemistry, the conversation around him could go well beyond an All-Star nod and start drifting into MVP territory.
There is, however, a real argument that Orlando could send more than one player. The idea is simple: the Magic should have at least one All-Star this season, and depending on the record, they could have two. Banchero and Wagner are the two names with the strongest cases, and both have shown they can play at that level.
Wagner’s case is built on impact, not hype. The issue has been availability, with injuries interrupting his run, but when he is healthy, he brings a complete game.
One evaluation pointed to his all-around production and said that if health were not a concern, Wagner might actually be the pick over Banchero because he can serve as the engine of an entire offense. Another assessment was even more direct about his chances in Phoenix, noting that he has a strong shot after the Magic’s last All-Star in 2024.
That same view argued that if Wagner had not been injured in December last season, he might have been the one to get the call over then-Heat guard Norman Powell or Indiana’s Pascal Siakam. His length, mobility, and underrated defense were cited as the sort of traits coaches tend to reward.
Still, Banchero remains the favorite. He has already been an All-Star, and he continues to produce at a high level. If health is the deciding factor, that pushes the edge his way.
Then there is Bane, the name that makes this conversation more interesting. The case for him depends on Orlando being really, really good.
In that scenario, a player who fills his role efficiently can absolutely get All-Star treatment. Bane was brought in for a reason, with the Magic sending four first-round picks to get him, and a system built around spacing should work in his favor.
If he becomes one of the league’s best three-point shooters, his first All-Star appearance suddenly becomes very realistic.
For now, though, the cleanest pick is still Banchero. Wagner has the talent to crash the party, and Bane has a path if Orlando takes off. But if you’re betting on one Magic player to make the 2027 All-Star Game, Banchero is the name to circle.

Magic Coaching Reset Could Define What This Core Really Is
A new chapter is underway in Orlando after the Magic moved on from Jamahl Mosley and handed the sideline to Sean Sweeney, a first-time head coach whose rsum was built as an assistant and associate head coach around the league. For a team trying to find out exactly what this core can become, the coaching change is more than a cosmetic reset. It is a chance to see whether a different voice and a different structure can unlock a roster that has been searching for a clearer identity.
Wendell Carter Jr. has already offered an early endorsement of Sweeneys style, pointing to the daily standards and detail work that come with a staff voice rooted in winning habits. Sweeney brings plenty of big-game experience from his years on contender staffs, and Orlando is betting that can translate into something more meaningful in a new setting. The real test now is whether the Magic can absorb those lessons quickly enough to turn optimism into traction. [Read more 🡒]
Anthony Black Faces A Defining Season With The Magic
Anthony Black heads into the coming season with a clear chance to shape his future in Orlando. The Magic guard is eligible for a contract extension, but the team is not treating that as an immediate priority as it manages a tight payroll built around its core players. Black has made noticeable offensive strides, and the organization likes the direction he is going, even if there is still development ahead.
The coming months could matter a great deal for both sides because Black still has room to grow and the Magic have to weigh his progress against their financial reality. A strong season would only strengthen his case as part of the franchises long-term plans, while the clubs current approach leaves his situation very much in play as next summer approaches. Cavaliers Get An Early Test Against A Magic Team With Something To Prove
The Cavaliers are set to get another look at an Orlando group that has already used this preseason as a chance to tighten up the details. The teams meet at the Kia Center at 7 p.m. ET, with the game on NBCSN and Peacock, and the Magic have made clear they want to be sharper on shot selection while continuing to correct the mistakes that showed up in their earlier preseason loss to Cleveland.
Sean Sweeney also offered a small update on Jalen Suggs, noting that the guard is no longer under the weather. Even so, Orlando is still sorting out what his status and workload will look like against the Cavaliers, which adds another layer of interest for a team trying to use preseason reps the right way without losing sight of the bigger picture.
