Tracy McGrady, an iconic scorer in NBA history, left an indelible mark during his tenure with the Orlando Magic, where he led the league in scoring in 2003 and 2004. Fast forward to today, and the Magic have a new rising star in Paolo Banchero. At just 23, Banchero has already made waves, earning an All-Star nod in the 2023-24 season after claiming Rookie of the Year honors.
Under Banchero's leadership, the Magic have consistently reached the playoffs over the past two years. This season, with the addition of Desmond Bane, expectations were high for the team to ascend from a playoff contender to an Eastern Conference powerhouse. Despite injuries to key players like Boston's Jayson Tatum and Indiana's Tyrese Haliburton, the Magic are holding their own in the sixth spot, narrowly ahead of the Hawks, Heat, and 76ers with a 38-31 record.
While Banchero is having a solid season, he's yet to make that leap to elite status. McGrady, a Hall of Famer, believes it's only a matter of time. "It'll come," McGrady assures, acknowledging the pressures and challenges Banchero faces without a veteran mentor to guide him.
McGrady sees superstar potential in Banchero, citing his size and skill set as key assets. "He's got the tools," McGrady emphasizes. "It's about how he approaches the game, the advice he seeks, and how he applies it on the court."
Drawing comparisons to LeBron James, one of the game's all-time greats, McGrady suggests Banchero's stat line should reflect a similar impact. Currently, Banchero averages 22.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game, impressive numbers but shy of LeBron's career averages.
When it comes to comparisons, McGrady finds Banchero unique. "He doesn't remind me of anyone," McGrady notes.
"At 6-foot-10, he's a big presence on the court. With his size and talent, he could be averaging 30 points if he wanted to."
McGrady's insights highlight the potential for Banchero to elevate his game and become a dominant force in the NBA, much like McGrady himself once was. The future looks bright for both Banchero and the Magic as they continue to build on their success.
