The Orlando Magic faced a tough night, clawing back from a 12-point deficit in the final minutes only to fall short against the Indiana Pacers, 128-126. Despite a valiant effort by Paolo Banchero, who had the chance to tie the game at the buzzer, Pascal Siakam's defensive stand sealed Orlando's fate, marking their fifth consecutive loss.
The third quarter was a turning point, as the Pacers exploded for 44 points, with Aaron Nesmith and Andrew Nembhard leading the charge. Nesmith dropped 16 points, while Nembhard dished out seven assists, leaving the Magic's defense scrambling. Banchero, however, was relentless in the closing minutes, scoring seven points and adding an assist, until Siakam's block ended his final drive.
For Orlando, this defeat was particularly painful. The Magic were hoping to snap their losing streak against a Pacers squad that had been struggling with a franchise-record 16 straight losses. Instead, they slid to eighth place, narrowly holding on due to the Miami Heat's own losing skid.
Orlando's defense was porous, allowing the Pacers to score well above their average and shoot an impressive 55 percent from the field. Missing their All-Defensive guard Jalen Suggs certainly hurt, but it was still a lackluster defensive showing.
Banchero was a bright spot with a season-high 39 points, shooting 4-of-9 from beyond the arc and contributing six assists. However, his five turnovers highlighted the team’s struggles in maintaining possession. With key players like Franz Wagner, Suggs, and Anthony Black sidelined, the Magic were left with little room for mistakes.
The game took a decisive turn when Indiana capitalized on Orlando's errors, including a crucial steal by T.J. McConnell that led to an easy layup.
As the Magic face a critical stretch with 11 games remaining, five against Eastern Conference playoff contenders, their recent form is concerning. Having traded multiple first-round picks for Desmond Bane in a bid to win now, Orlando finds itself in a precarious spot as the playoffs loom.
