Nikola Vucevic is back in Orlando, and for David Steele, that was enough to light up the room.
The longtime Magic broadcaster made it clear he’s thrilled to see one of the franchise’s most familiar faces return, calling Vucevic “one of my All-Time favorite players” and praising him as “a genuine good human being and really good basketball player.I think he'll be a good fit.”
For Orlando, the reunion comes with a lot of layers. Vucevic already owns a chunk of the franchise record book, and he’s within striking distance of two more marks - 1,012 points and 101 games shy of first place in each category. He’s also back in a city his family clearly never stopped loving, after buying a house in Orlando and keeping it even through trades.
This time around, though, his role won’t resemble the old one.
The Magic created room to make the move after convincing Jonathan Isaac to renegotiate his contract, which allowed them to keep Jevon Carter and add one more free agent. Once interest became mutual, Orlando and Vucevic moved quickly to reconnect.
How Sean Sweeney uses him will shape everything from there. Vucevic could function as an offense-first complement to Goga Bitadze’s defense, step in for Wendell Carter Jr. because of injury or matchup needs, or eventually claim the first big role off the bench.
The most likely offensive blueprint sounds familiar, even if the usage is reduced: hit open catch-and-shoot threes, make smart connective passes from the top of the key, elbow, short roll and block, and handle post-up or midrange chances only when the look is clean or the matchup is right. The rest is about rebounding, boxing out and doing the dirty work.
Defensively, the fit is less settled.
Vucevic has shown he can hold up in drop coverage, including during the years when he played next to the Jonathan Isaac/Aaron Gordon frontline under Clifford. That could still work in spots, especially with the current group of defenders around him - Isaac, Franz Wagner, Anthony Black, Jalen Suggs, Wendell Carter Jr., Goga Bitadze, Desmond Bane, Paolo Banchero, Noah Penda and rookie Izaiyah Nelson all give Orlando options. But drop coverage is a tougher sell now against point guards who can punish it with pull-up threes.
That’s where the bigger question lands: can Sweeney keep Vucevic on the floor if he wants to lean into the aggressive switching defense he likes? The best answer may be pairing Vucevic with versatile defenders such as Franz, Suggs and another 4/5 like Wendell, Isaac or Paolo, while letting Vucevic stay home near the rim as the rest of the group flies around on the perimeter.
Over the regular season, that job should be manageable, especially when he’s being used against bench units. The playoffs are a different test, and that’s the real challenge for Orlando’s bigs.
Still, the upside is obvious enough. If the team stays healthy, there should be chances to find lineups with positive net ratings and enough two-way balance to make Vucevic useful. There’s even a path to something bigger if he catches fire from deep and helps unlock a 5-out look that opens the floor.
For now, the feeling around Orlando is simple: the fans are happy to have him back.
Vucevic gets another chance to add to his franchise legacy, play meaningful basketball for a contender in a city he loves, and maybe even put a storybook finish on his career if it leads to a title. And when the crowd starts making that familiar noise again, it probably won’t be boos.
It’ll be the building chanting “Vooooooch!” after another one from deep.
