The Orlando Magic’s roster questions are starting to get sharper as the pressure rises.
With the Eastern Conference looking tougher and expectations climbing, the front office may eventually have to make a painful call if this season starts going sideways. Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner remain the obvious headliners, but the bigger question is what happens around them if Orlando can’t get moving early.
Outside of the coaching change, the team’s most notable roster move was bringing back veteran center Nikola Vučević to strengthen the second unit and add another dependable scoring option off the bench. That move fits the broader picture in Orlando: the core is maturing, the standard is higher, and another first-round exit would only intensify the urgency.
The Magic have been bounced in the first round in each of their last three playoff trips, and that history hangs over everything. If the start is rocky again, it would not be a surprise to see the front office look for a reset without tearing down the whole thing.
The speculation around Banchero and Wagner has been out there, but moving either of those two remains highly unlikely. If Orlando does decide to shake things up, the changes are much more likely to come from the supporting cast.
That was the view offered by Don Strouble on a recent episode of the Full Court Magic podcast, where he laid out who he thinks would be the first players considered if the season goes off track.
“We know it's going to be more difficult,” Strouble said. “We know this Eastern Conference landscape is going to be lethal, but I just don't agree with the notion that Wagner or Banchero would be the first out the door if the Magic have another underwhelming campaign.
Given the nature of how this organization works, there is going to be a chance for Sean Sweeney to do what he needs to do, and barring any catastrophes, once again, I just don't see any of those two guys going. I believe it would be someone like Jalen Suggs first, maybe a Wendell Carter Jr., so on and so forth.”
Orlando still has a stash of future draft capital even after feeling the effects of the Desmond Bane trade. The Magic control first-round picks in 2027, 2031, 2032 and 2033, plus seven second-rounders.
Bleacher Report also pointed to the roster itself as Orlando’s biggest trade chip. Along with Banchero, Wagner and Desmond Bane, the outlet highlighted former lottery pick Anthony Black as one of the team’s most valuable pieces.
The bigger issue, though, is that the talent has not yet consistently turned into the kind of team success many expected. That’s why Bleacher Report believes Orlando could still bring back a major haul if it ever chose to put one of its top players on the market in a blockbuster deal.
