The Orlando Magic are headed into training camp with pressure on every side of the room.
They’ve reached the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, but that alone isn’t enough for this group anymore. Orlando wants more than a trip to the postseason. The goal is a real run, and the organization has already shown it’s willing to make changes when progress stalls.
That’s the backdrop for two storylines worth buying as camp opens: the impact of Sean Sweeney, and the possibility that this roster could look very different if this season doesn’t move the needle. There’s also one idea I’m not ready to believe just yet - that major changes are coming during the regular season.
The Magic have already pushed this core forward once by adding Desmond Bane in a blockbuster deal with the Memphis Grizzlies after their second straight first-round exit. Then, after a third consecutive opening-round loss last season, they changed coaches and moved on from Jamahl Mosley in favor of Sweeney.
Now Sweeney steps into a high-stakes job with real pressure attached. He’s been to the NBA Finals in two of the last three seasons as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks in 2024 and the San Antonio Spurs in 2026, and that experience matters for a team trying to climb from good to dangerous.
Orlando clearly believes he’s the right fit. The Magic were impressed with him during the interview process and think he’s the kind of coach this roster needs to get over the hump.
The other storyline is less about what happens in October and more about what could be waiting if this season goes sideways. Four of Orlando’s five starters are already on contracts worth more than $100 million, and Anthony Black is expected to be in line for a similar extension next summer. If the standings don’t show progress, the offseason could bring bigger, more serious changes.
That said, I’m not buying a midseason shakeup. The Magic have been cautious at the trade deadline over the last couple of years, and that approach should hold again. Orlando seems set on giving this group a full season together, with the hope that everyone can finally stay healthy enough to build real continuity.
That’s the bet the franchise is making. The Magic believe this roster can be elite when healthy, which is why they’re still investing in it.
But the clock is ticking, and the results have to improve soon. For now, though, they’ll get at least one more full season to prove it.
