Dylan Murphy is moving from the Magic organization to Michigan, where he’ll join the Wolverines as an assistant coach, according to Alejandro Zuniga of The Michigan Insider.
Murphy has spent the last eight years in Orlando’s system, but his path to the bench started in a very different place. As Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel noted a few years ago, he first made his name as a basketball blogger before getting hired by the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, now the Noblesville Boom, in the fall of 2013. He spent three seasons there as an assistant with Indiana’s G League affiliate.
Murphy’s rise with the Magic was steady. He came aboard in 2018 as a basketball operations analyst for the coaching staff, then was elevated to assistant coach in 2020. Three years later, he took over as head coach of the Osceola Magic, Orlando’s affiliate.
That Osceola team has been one of the NBAGL’s stronger clubs under Murphy. Zuniga notes that it finished with the best regular-season record in the Eastern Conference in two of the past three years. The affiliate also reached the G League finals in 2025 before falling to the Stockton Kings.
Murphy’s work was recognized again this past season, when he finished third in NBAGL Coach of the Year voting for the 2025/26 campaign. Now he’s headed to Michigan, where he’ll join Mike Boynton Jr.’s staff as the Wolverines try to defend their NCAA title.
Boynton took over as head coach after Dusty May was hired by the Mavericks and had previously spent seven seasons as Oklahoma State’s head coach. He also served as an assistant under May for the past two seasons.
