As the Orlando Magic gear up for their matchup against the Charlotte Hornets, head coach Jamahl Mosley offered a detailed look into where the team stands - from tactical adjustments to key injury updates that could shape the game’s outcome.
Fine-Tuning After a Grueling Road Trip
Coming off a demanding West Coast swing, Mosley emphasized the need to recalibrate, particularly on offense. The focus? Spacing, pace, and getting back to what worked earlier in the season.
“We just went back to the details of the work,” Mosley said after shootaround. “Offensively, it’s about finding the right spacing again.
We’ve got to get our sprint game back - get out in transition, get early, easy baskets. And defensively, the communication has to be sharp, especially against a team like Charlotte.”
The Hornets may not have an elite record, but they bring energy and pace - two things that can expose a team still shaking off road fatigue. That’s why Mosley is drilling the fundamentals: transition defense, perimeter closeouts, and rebounding.
Tristan da Silva Nearing Return
One of the more encouraging updates came on rookie forward Tristan da Silva. After dealing with a shoulder issue, he was a full participant in walkthroughs and is expected to be available tonight.
Mosley didn’t downplay what da Silva brings to the table. “It’s key for him.
Before the shoulder started bothering him, he was playing with a lot of confidence - attacking the basket, being in the right spots defensively, knocking down shots. He’s a big part of what we do offensively.”
Getting da Silva back in rhythm could help stabilize a rotation that’s been in flux due to injuries.
Franz Wagner Progressing, But Still Limited
Franz Wagner, one of Orlando’s most consistent two-way players, remains sidelined but is making small strides in his recovery. He’s currently limited to spot shooting and isn’t putting much pressure on his foot yet. Still, just being able to move around again is a step in the right direction.
“It’s a slow progression,” Mosley said, noting that while Wagner isn’t ready for contact, the long-term outlook remains positive.
Moe Wagner’s Recovery Still Ongoing
As for Moe Wagner, there’s no firm timetable, but he’s moving through the recovery process at his own pace. He’s been involved in controlled live-action drills like two-on-two and three-on-three, which are critical checkpoints in his return.
“It’s about how he responds to treatment and contact,” Mosley explained. “Those stages are going to continue to be important.”
Jalen Suggs' Presence Still Felt
Though Jalen Suggs is listed as doubtful, his presence on the recent road trip wasn’t just symbolic - it mattered. Suggs continues to do spot shooting but hasn’t been cleared for contact. Still, his energy and leadership remain key.
“He brings a spark to this group,” Mosley said. “Even just having him around helps with the togetherness of the team.”
Goga Bitadze Testing His Limits
Big man Goga Bitadze is questionable heading into the game. He went through shootaround and was expected to test things out further before a final decision is made.
Scouting the Hornets: Better Than Their Record
Mosley had high praise for Charlotte’s recent play, noting that they’ve won three of their last five and are playing with a level of urgency that doesn’t always show up in the standings.
“They play extremely hard. They push the ball, get the three up fast.
So we’ve got to get back in transition and close out to shooters. And they crash the offensive glass hard.
Charles [Lee] has that team playing with a lot of energy.”
The Hornets’ shot volume and pace will test Orlando’s transition defense and rebounding - two areas the Magic can’t afford to slack on.
Home for the Holidays: A Needed Boost
After a taxing road schedule, being home for Christmas has provided more than just rest - it’s given the team a much-needed emotional lift.
“It lifts the spirits,” Mosley said. “Just being able to sleep in their own beds, be around family, and get the right treatment - that’s huge.
Celebrating the holiday at home matters. It really does.”
As the Magic look to stabilize their rotation and build momentum, tonight’s game against the Hornets offers a chance to reset. With da Silva expected back, Suggs and Franz Wagner progressing, and the team finally back on home court, Orlando has an opportunity to reestablish its identity - one possession at a time.
