John Konchar is drawing a familiar kind of attention this time of year: not the splashy sort, but the practical, roster-filling kind that can still matter once the season starts.
Marc Stein of The Stein Line reports that Konchar is on the Knicks’ radar and has also attracted interest from the Heat, Magic, and Raptors. That gives the veteran wing at least four teams with some level of interest as he looks for his next landing spot.
Konchar’s path to free agency has moved quickly. He spent most of his career in Memphis before being traded to Utah in last season’s Jaren Jackson Jr. blockbuster. From there, he was dealt again last month to Minnesota with Cody Williams, then waived by the Timberwolves.
The 6’5″ swingman has never been a high-volume scorer, topping out at 5.1 points per game in a season. But he carved out a role with the Grizzlies by doing a little of everything.
He rebounds well for his position, can handle the ball some, and gives a team another defender who can cover multiple spots. He has also shown enough touch to keep defenses honest, hitting 34.9% of his career three-pointers.
The interest makes sense, though the market is not exactly wide open. All four teams are over the luxury tax line, and Toronto is especially limited because it does not have enough room below its first-apron hard cap to sign a free agent to a minimum-salary deal.
New York already has 13 players on standard contracts, and it’s viewed as more likely to use its 14th spot on a big man rather than another wing. Miami and Orlando each have 14 players on standard deals, and neither club is required to carry a full 15-man roster into the regular season.
Konchar also has some breathing room in the process. His full $6.17MM salary for the 2026/27 season was guaranteed and will be paid by Minnesota, so he does not need to rush into the first available offer. If the right NBA opportunity doesn’t show up in the next couple of weeks, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see more teams circle back later, especially if preseason injuries or underwhelming play create a need for depth.
