The return of Franz Wagner was a much-anticipated moment for the Orlando Magic, as they faced off against the Atlanta Hawks. Wagner's presence was a boost, but it wasn’t enough to fend off Atlanta's relentless attack.
Playing their second game in as many nights, the Magic struggled to keep pace, ultimately falling 130-101. This loss marked a clean sweep for the Hawks in their regular-season series against Orlando.
Orlando's defense seemed to falter, lacking the intensity and focus needed to counter the Hawks’ sharpshooting, especially from beyond the arc. Atlanta poured in 102 points by the end of the third quarter, showcasing their offensive prowess.
Magic coach Jamahl Mosley acknowledged the defensive lapses, stating, “Our defense broke down one too many times,” and praised Atlanta's performance, admitting, “They have our number in this moment.”
Despite forcing 17 turnovers and converting them into 16 points, the Magic couldn’t capitalize enough, as Atlanta managed 22 points off 18 Orlando turnovers. Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the Hawks with an impressive 32-point performance.
Now standing at 40-36, the Magic are set to hit the road, facing Dallas next before wrapping up their trip in New Orleans.
Franz Wagner's Return
After a long recovery from a high ankle sprain, Wagner made his comeback, albeit under a minutes restriction. He showed glimpses of his skill, scoring eight points in the first half despite missing his initial three attempts from deep.
Wagner ended the night with 12 points, one rebound, and two assists over 20 minutes of play. Reflecting on his return, Wagner said, “It’s definitely an adjustment... but it felt good to be out there.”
Second-Quarter Struggles
The game shifted dramatically in the second quarter. The Hawks turned a narrow deficit into a commanding lead, outscoring Orlando 47-26.
The Magic struggled from three-point land, missing all six attempts, while Atlanta capitalized, hitting 4 of 8. Five Magic turnovers led to easy transition points for the Hawks, who played with a blistering pace.
Wagner noted the difficulty, saying, “They scored 47 points... We weren’t moving the ball really well.”
Orlando never regained control, failing to cut the deficit to single digits after trailing 72-54 at halftime.
Banchero's Tough Night
Paolo Banchero had a challenging outing, missing his first five shots and scoring just one point in the opening nine minutes. He found the basket with a layup late in the first half and finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists, but also turned the ball over three times.
Three-Point Woes
The Magic's shooting struggles were evident, hitting only one three-pointer in the first half and finishing a dismal 6 for 32 from distance. Jalen Suggs, Wagner, and Desmond Bane combined for a tough 2 for 17 from beyond the arc. This allowed the Hawks to focus their defense inside, complicating Orlando’s attempts to score in the paint.
Alexander-Walker, on the other hand, was on fire from deep, sinking five threes as the Hawks shot 40.5% from downtown, sealing their dominant win.
