Surprise Twist Is Terrible News For Dillon Gabriel

Browns looking to reset with Deshaun Watson amid challenges and fresh strategy under new head coach.

Cleveland Browns fans know all too well the feeling of time dragging on, especially when it comes to their quarterback situation with Deshaun Watson. As he enters the final year of his hefty $230 million contract, it’s been a rollercoaster of suspensions, injuries, and underwhelming performances since he signed in 2022.

The Browns were looking forward to moving past this chapter after the 2026 season, freeing themselves from Watson's contract without wreaking havoc on the salary cap. But owner Jimmy Haslam might have thrown a wrench into those plans.

At the league meeting in Phoenix, Haslam, who previously called the Watson trade a “swing and a miss,” hinted at a fresh start under new head coach Todd Monken. Monken, known for his offensive acumen, brings a history of success with various quarterbacks. Haslam expressed optimism, saying Watson has a chance to thrive with Monken’s guidance.

The Browns’ quarterback room also features Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, both coming off tough rookie seasons. So, the competition isn’t exactly fierce.

Yet, the idea of Watson reclaiming his form in Cleveland is a tough sell. He’s battled significant injuries, including a major shoulder issue and two Achilles tears, and has only played 19 games since joining the Browns.

Haslam remains “cautiously optimistic” about Watson’s potential rebound. But with the Browns so close to closing this turbulent chapter, it’s perplexing to see them potentially reopening the book. Haslam’s previous admission of a misstep seemed to signal a turning point.

Yet, as history shows, the Browns’ quarterback conundrums are far from over. Fans might brace themselves for another summer of uncertainty, where the only sure winners are the opposing teams.
