Oregon State's Turnaround Suddenly Looks A Lot More Real

Oregon State showcases its strength in a commanding victory over Colorado State, setting the tone for the Pac-12 season.

Oregon State’s 56-26 win at Colorado State on Saturday was more than just a lopsided road victory. It was another clear sign that JaMarcus Shephard’s turnaround in Corvallis is moving fast.

The Beavers controlled the Pac-12 opener from the start, then slammed the door with a second-half surge after the Rams had briefly pulled within 13-12 early in the second quarter. From there, Oregon State tightened up on defense and started stacking scores, turning what had looked like a game into a runaway.

A big part of the afternoon belonged to freshman Jess Jelegree, who continued his rise as one of the country’s top receivers. He finished with 13 catches for 136 yards and five touchdowns, keeping alive a remarkable streak of 100-yard receiving games.

Three of those scores came from quarterback Brendan Atkinson, who was nearly perfect otherwise, completing 10 of 11 passes for 251 yards and five touchdowns. Atkinson’s only negative was a strip sack in the first half, but even that didn’t slow the Beavers for long.

The other turning point came on special teams and defense, where Oregon State did the kind of damage that changes a game’s feel in a hurry. After Colorado State had cut the lead to 13-12, the Rams booted the ball away, and Oregon State took over from there. The Beavers kept pushing the ball downfield, and once Jelegree started finding space, the Rams had no answer.

Aaron Butler also joined the scoring burst with a 30-yard touchdown run in the middle of the field, and the Beavers finished with 485 rushing yards overall. Vance Wells led the ground game with 80 yards on 13 carries, while Jacob Anderson added 66 yards on seven attempts. Nathan Elu had 42 yards on three carries, Tyler Voltin chipped in 21 yards, and the rest of the line kept the chains moving.

Colorado State’s offense had some bright spots but never found enough rhythm to keep up. Durell Robinson ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, and the Rams got 60 yards from Newberry on 13 carries, 64 yards from Cornell Hatcher Jr. on seven carries, 42 yards from Tre Garrison on three carries, and a receiving touchdown from Aaron Butler on one catch, though it only turned into a 30-yard score.

The Rams scored eight of their 10 possessions, but Oregon State’s defense still forced enough stops to keep the game out of reach. Colorado State’s first empty possession came when the Beavers chose to run out the clock to end the first half, which left the Rams with little room to recover.

By the end, Oregon State had answered every Colorado State push and then some. After winning two in a row on the road, the Beavers return home next week to face San Diego State.

Oregon State Fueled A Sideline Meltdown Colorado State Couldn't Hide

Oregon States trip through Fort Collins turned into more than just a lopsided result for Colorado State. In the middle of the game, coach Jim Mora Jr. made a major defensive change, handing over playcalling duties and trying to steady a unit that was already being overwhelmed. The move came with the Rams under heavy pressure and with Oregon State still piling on points.

The adjustment did little to change the evenings direction, as Colorado State still gave up 56 points. Tyson Summers left the sideline after being relieved of his duties and is no longer with the football program, a sign of just how badly things had broken down for the Rams. For Oregon State, it was the kind of game that exposed a defense in free fall and left the Beavers with plenty to build on, even if the bigger story in the box score was what happened on the other side. Oregon States Passing Attack Just Sent A Loud Early Message

The first Pac-12 game of the season at Canvas Stadium turned into a showcase for Oregon States passing game, and Braden Atkinson was at the center of it. In a 56-26 win over Colorado State, the quarterback kept the Beavers in rhythm from the start, piling up 413 yards and five touchdowns while helping set the tone for a night when the offense looked in command of the matchup.

Jesse Legree was just as important, stretching the field and finishing with three touchdown catches as Oregon State kept finding ways to attack through the air. His latest big night also continued a remarkable run of production, giving the Beavers another proof point that this passing game is more than just hot for one week and may be building into something much bigger. Oregon States Fast Start Helped Spark A Stunning Colorado State Meltdown

Oregon States fast start against Colorado State did more than put points on the board. It helped turn an already rough afternoon into a jarring sideline situation for the Rams, whose defensive coordinator Tyson Summers was gone by the break in a loss that quickly tilted out of control. For the Beavers, the early pressure and tempo were part of a result that rippled well beyond the final score.

Colorado State is now 2-3, and the fallout has already reached the coaching staff. Jim Mora Jr. has since confirmed that Summers is no longer with the program and that Kenny McClendon has taken over the defensive coordinator role, with San Diego State up next. For Oregon State, it was the kind of game that can expose more than one opponent problem at once. [Read more 🡒]
