Oregon State's Freshman Breakout Is Changing Everything For The Beavers

Jesse Legree's outstanding freshman season at Oregon State positions him as a rising star on the college football scene, challenging historical records and catching the eye of top programs across the nation.

Jeremiah Smith has spent the last two seasons as the standard for instant-impact freshman wide receivers. This fall, though, Oregon State has a first-year star who is pushing that conversation into a different lane entirely.

His name is Jesse Legree, and the freshman out of near Baltimore has gone from little-known three-star signee to one of the most productive receivers in the country. Through seven games, he has 46 catches for a nation-best 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns, and he has hit both 100 yards and at least one score every single week. No freshman season has looked quite like this.

Legree’s scoring pace is the eye-opener. The only freshmen in college football history with more receiving touchdowns in a season are Michael Crabtree, who had 22, and Smith, who had 15. Legree already has 14 in just seven games.

At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, he doesn’t win with size. He wins with speed, quickness and the kind of raw athleticism that keeps turning ordinary snaps into huge gains. Oregon State head coach JaMarcus Shephard has seen that formula carry a team that started the year with low expectations and has now surged to a 5-2 record.

The Beavers had won only seven games combined over their previous two seasons, but Legree has helped put them in position to reach bowl eligibility. He has also forced his way into the Heisman discussion, where DraftKings lists him at +2100, fifth best in the nation behind Smith, Miami QB Darian Mensah, Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss and Notre Dame QB CJ Carr.

Legree’s future only adds to the intrigue. Unless NFL Draft eligibility rules change in an unexpected way, he has two more college seasons left after this one. That means the program that once landed him as an under-the-radar recruit may not be able to keep him for long, especially with reports of multi-million dollar paydays making it likely that major programs will come calling with seven-figure transfer offers.

As for the record book, there are still a couple of lofty targets in view. Trevor Insley’s 2,060 receiving yards in a season and Troy Edwards’s 27 touchdown catches would both require more heavy lifting, but given the way Legree has already blown past expectations, nothing about this start feels ordinary.

Boise State Just Got A Huge Playoff Opening To Protect

James Madisons perfect run is over, and with it came a major shift in the Group of Six playoff race. The Dukes had been building a case as the team to beat for the lone non-power conference spot in the College Football Playoff field, but the loss to Appalachian State opened the door wider for Boise State and tightened the squeeze on the rest of the pack, including Oregon State and New Mexico.

For Oregon State, the path now looks even more crowded, and the margin for error keeps shrinking with every passing week. The Beavers still have a chance to stay relevant in the race, but their remaining schedule leaves little room for a slip if they want to keep pace with Boise States momentum and avoid getting left behind in the final Group of Six scramble. Drew Rasmussen Just Became A Bigger World Series Story For Beavs Fans

Drew Rasmussen kept making the Tampa Bay Rays' postseason look manageable in Game 5 of the ALCS, working seven innings and giving up just one earned run as Tampa Bay knocked off the Cleveland Guardians to reach the World Series. For Oregon State fans, it was another reminder that one of the program's most prominent recent arms is still capable of shaping October at the highest level, especially when the stakes are at their loudest.

Rasmussen's next turn is already drawing attention for a different reason. Tampa Bay's World Series rotation plans have added a little extra intrigue around his place in the opener, and for Beavs fans tracking every step of his postseason run, the setup only makes his World Series role feel bigger than a standard start. There is still a little more to learn about how the Rays will handle him from here, but his path back to the mound has already become part of the championship conversation. [Read more 🡒]

Oregon State Just Landed A Huge Win In Jesse Legree Saga

Jesse Legrees decision gave Oregon State a major boost heading into the next chapter of its offense. The freshman standout and CBS Sports All-America selection had already become one of the most productive receivers in the country, and his return gives the Beavers a proven centerpiece as they continue building under new general manager Eron Hodges and head coach JaMarcus Shephard, who both helped recruit him after tracking his high school tape.

Legree made the announcement from his home gym, ending a period when his future had started to draw plenty of attention. For Oregon State, keeping him in the fold matters well beyond one offseason, because he is not just a promising young target but a player who has already shown he can change the shape of a passing game and raise the ceiling for everything around it.
