Oregon State Now Faces A New Problem In Washington State Game

Washington State's new starting quarterback, Owen Eshelman, is set to face a tough challenge against Oregon State's formidable defense in an unexpected lineup change.

Washington State is making a quarterback switch before heading to Oregon State, and the Cougars are handing the job to a player who is about to make his college debut.

Owen Eshelman will start Saturday against the Beavers, WSU coach Kirby Moore announced Monday, with Caden Pinnick moving out of the role. Eshelman sat out last season as a true freshman redshirt and has yet to appear in a college game.

“Caden understands that this is a team-first decision and it’s about what’s doing best for the team moving into the second half of the season,” Moore said. “Owen has been right there pushing the quarterback room for the past 10 months and has prepared like the starter and done everything we’ve asked of him. Regardless of who’s at quarterback, we’ve got to do a better job and hold ourselves accountable in the key areas that win and lose games.”

Pinnick, a transfer from UC Davis, arrived with a strong résumé after finishing second to Braden Atkinson for the Jerry Rice Award last year. But the production never really followed for Washington State through the first six games. He threw for 952 yards, three touchdowns and five interceptions, and his 106.66 efficiency rating sat at the bottom of the conference.

The setback came into sharper focus in Friday’s 17-16 loss at Utah State, when Pinnick completed 23 of 36 passes for 156 yards. Afterward, Moore pointed to the offense’s missed chances.

“Saturday going back through the entire game we had too many missed opportunities, especially in the red zone and in the second half,” Moore said. “We had opportunities to score more points. There’s more than the quarterback with that, but we’re excited for Owen’s opportunity on Saturday.”

Eshelman brings a different profile to the position. The 6-foot-3, 204-pound quarterback was a three-star recruit in the 2025 class, ranked No. 59 among quarterbacks and No. 1,072 overall by the 247Sports Composite.

At Norman North (Okla.) High School, he threw for 2,507 yards and 29 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,312 yards and 19 scores as a senior.

“He’s an accurate passer,” Moore said. “He’s shown the ability to extend plays and I think he’s got great relationships with his teammates so we’re excited to go to work with him.”

Oregon State Rolled But Two Concerns Still Followed The Beavers

Oregon States 66-14 win over San Diego State at Reser Stadium looked like the kind of complete performance a coach wants to bottle up and save for later. The Beavers controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides, with the offense rolling and the defense delivering a steady answer whenever the Aztecs tried to settle in. Jesse Legree was among the players who stood out, and the overall feel was of a team that dictated the game rather than reacting to it.

Still, the cleanest wins usually leave a few things to sort through, and this one was no exception. The return of Pac-12 referees added its own layer, with a handful of officiating mistakes mixed into the afternoon, while Oregon State also had some issues to clean up in the kicking game and at cornerback. After a lopsided result like this, those are the kinds of details that matter most, because better opponents tend to find every crack. [Read more 🡒]

Oregon State Gets Needed Reinforcements As One Injury Concern Grows

Oregon State is getting some welcome signs of help as the season moves along, even if the injury picture is still uneven. Receiver Xayvion Noland is expected to be available this week after missing the previous game, which gives the Beavers another option as they try to steady the offense and keep some rhythm going around a line that has been shorthanded.

The bigger concern remains on the defensive side, where linebacker Kord Shaw is not close to a return and appears unlikely to be back this season. Along the offensive front, there is some movement in the right direction: left tackle Josiah Timoteo has been practicing again, and interior lineman Carter Guillaume is edging nearer to being ready, giving Oregon State at least a little hope that its front could get healthier soon. JaMarcus Shephard Hinted At Roster Changes That Could Hit Oregon State Hard

JaMarcus Shephard spent his Monday press conference looking back at Oregon States win over San Diego State and ahead to a tricky matchup with Washington State, but much of the conversation quickly shifted to the kind of midseason roster maintenance that can shape a teams next few weeks. The Beavers head coach praised the defense and his coaching staff, and he also reflected on his own ties to Washington State as he described this stretch of the season as an important one for sorting out where the team stands.

Shephard did offer updates on availability, injuries and other roster movement, which made the session feel bigger than a routine victory recap. For Oregon State, the concern now is how those changes might affect depth and continuity as the schedule tightens, especially with the Cougars coming into view and the middle of the season demanding answers fast.
