Oregon State Just Ended The Jesse Legree Rumors For Good

Amidst a season of triumph and accolades, Oregon State star Jesse Legree makes an early and decisive commitment to bolster the Beavers' future.

Jesse Legree’s breakout has already been loud, and now the true freshman receiver has made his next move just as clear.

On Friday, Oct. 23, the Baltimore area native returned to Saint Frances Academy, his high school gymnasium, and put pen to paper to stay with Oregon State through the 2027-28 season. That announcement shuts down transfer chatter before the offseason even arrives, despite the kind of buzz that started building almost immediately after Legree’s first two games with the Beavers.

The timing is unusual in today’s college game, where players often use the end of the season to signal they’re coming back. Legree did it in the middle of October instead, removing one of the sport’s favorite distractions while Oregon State keeps rolling through a strong year.

And what a year it’s been for him. Through seven weeks, Legree leads the nation in receiving with 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns on 46 catches. He has been a huge part of Oregon State’s turnaround under first-year coach Jamarcus Shephard.

The Beavers are 5-2 entering their bye week, and both losses came against Houston and Texas Tech, teams ranked inside the AP Poll’s top 15 heading into Week 8. Since dropping those first two games, Oregon State has ripped off five straight wins. That stretch includes a victory over rival Washington State and three games in which the Beavers scored more than 50 points: Montana, Colorado State and San Diego State.

Legree’s decision keeps him in Corvallis for another run and leaves him right where he is now: in the thick of the Heisman Trophy conversation as a fringe contender, and as the biggest threat to Jeremiah Smith for the Biletnikoff Award. With four games left on the schedule, Oregon State still has plenty in front of it, including a push toward a spot in the final year of the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Oregon State's Freshman Breakout Is Changing Everything For The Beavers

Jesse Legrees arrival has turned Oregon States season into one of the most surprising stories in the country. The freshman wide receiver has given first-year head coach JaMarcus Shephard a true go-to weapon, and the Beavers 5-2 start has been built in large part on a passing game that now has a clear centerpiece. What makes it even more striking is the company Legree is already keeping, with his early production landing him in the conversation with some of the most notable freshman receivers college football has ever seen.

For Oregon State, the next question is how long this can keep going and how high the ceiling really is. Legree is already drawing national attention in the Heisman race, which says as much about his weekly impact as it does about how quickly he has become the face of the Beavers offense. The numbers are eye-catching enough on their own, but the bigger issue for Oregon State is whether this breakout stays on its current pace as the schedule tightens and the stakes climb. Boise State Just Got A Huge Playoff Opening To Protect

James Madisons perfect run is over, and with it came a major shift in the Group of Six playoff race. The Dukes had been building a case as the team to beat for the lone non-power conference spot in the College Football Playoff field, but the loss to Appalachian State opened the door wider for Boise State and tightened the squeeze on the rest of the pack, including Oregon State and New Mexico.

For Oregon State, the path now looks even more crowded, and the margin for error keeps shrinking with every passing week. The Beavers still have a chance to stay relevant in the race, but their remaining schedule leaves little room for a slip if they want to keep pace with Boise States momentum and avoid getting left behind in the final Group of Six scramble. Drew Rasmussen Just Became A Bigger World Series Story For Beavs Fans

Drew Rasmussen kept making the Tampa Bay Rays' postseason look manageable in Game 5 of the ALCS, working seven innings and giving up just one earned run as Tampa Bay knocked off the Cleveland Guardians to reach the World Series. For Oregon State fans, it was another reminder that one of the program's most prominent recent arms is still capable of shaping October at the highest level, especially when the stakes are at their loudest.

Rasmussen's next turn is already drawing attention for a different reason. Tampa Bay's World Series rotation plans have added a little extra intrigue around his place in the opener, and for Beavs fans tracking every step of his postseason run, the setup only makes his World Series role feel bigger than a standard start. There is still a little more to learn about how the Rays will handle him from here, but his path back to the mound has already become part of the championship conversation. [Read more 🡒]
