Rece Davis had to walk back a line that aged badly in a hurry.
During ESPN’s College GameDay, Davis pointed out that Oklahoma State had won 30 straight home openers and then added, “It’s a really good thing I got that note in because that’s about to come to a screeching halt today when the Ducks come rolling in.”
Instead, Oklahoma State knocked off Oregon 39-31 and stretched that home-opener streak to 31 games. The win also snapped a run of 21 straight losses the Cowboys had absorbed against FBS opponents.
Davis later addressed the moment on Tuesday’s edition of The Pat McAfee Show and owned it.
“Also, the Oklahoma State people have been upset, Pat, because when we were doing the warmups - or actually, I think it was before we talked to (Dan) Lanning on Saturday,” Davis said. “I made a comment, sort of a snarky one admittedly, and I said Oklahoma State had won 30 straight home openers and I was really glad I got that note in because it was about to come to a screeching halt. I was wrong about that.
“Yeah, I was wrong about that. Now it’s 31.”
Given the way Oklahoma State looked after its Week 1 loss to Tulsa, Davis wasn’t alone in thinking Oregon would have the upper hand. But the Cowboys flipped the script fast, and Davis pointed to the turnaround in his remarks.
“I think Oklahoma State coming off that loss to Tulsa against Oregon at home, Drew Mestemaker told his teammates, ‘You gotta forget about this stuff,'” Davis said. “And then went out and balled out. Overcame mistakes and then put his body on the line to get in the end zone late, and they beat the Ducks.”
