Oregon State Gets A Real Test Despite Entering As Clear Favorite

In a key Pac-12 matchup, San Diego State faces long odds against Oregon State, with both teams looking to solidify their standings early in the conference race.

San Diego State’s wild win over Texas State bought the Aztecs a little breathing room, but it didn’t change the math for Saturday’s trip to Oregon State. The market still sees a steep climb ahead, with the Aztecs listed as 14.5-point underdogs against the Beavers in their Pac-12 meeting.

San Diego State sits at 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play after edging Texas State 31-29 at home. Oregon State is 3-2 and also 1-0, and the Beavers are carrying a moneyline of -750.

The Aztecs are +520. The over-under is set at 53.5 points.

That opening conference win mattered for SDSU, but the bigger picture is still unforgiving. The Aztecs can’t afford to slip early in the league race, and they already have as many losses as they finished with in the entire last regular season. Another setback would also make the path to bowl eligibility much tighter as they chase a second straight bowl season.

San Diego State’s win over Texas State came with plenty of roster chaos attached. The Aztecs were missing several players because of injuries and a mumps outbreak, yet they still found a way to pull it out by leaning on depth.

Coach Sean Lewis usually keeps injury information close to the vest, and the first availability report of the week is due Wednesday evening on the league’s website. Even then, it won’t specify injuries or illnesses.

The biggest example of SDSU’s next-man-up approach was true freshman running back Josiah Lucas. Filling in for injured starter Lucky Sutton, Lucas ran for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He became the first true freshman to top 100 rushing yards for the Aztecs since Donnel Pumphrey in 2013.

There still isn’t an update on Sutton, who aggravated a high ankle sprain at Toledo two games ago, or Javion “Chop” Kinnard, who left that same game with what looked like a left knee injury. The school has also declined to address the mumps outbreak, pointing to various government guidelines.

Oregon State has had SDSU’s number for a long time. The Beavers lead the series 5-2 and have won the last five meetings. San Diego State’s last win in the matchup came in 1975 in Corvallis.

The Beavers come in after a convincing 56-26 road win at Colorado State to open conference play. They dropped their first two games to Houston and Texas Tech, then turned things around with three straight victories.

Before the season, most observers picked San Diego State to finish second in the Pac-12 behind Boise State, the heavy favorite. Instead, the Aztecs have slid in most power rankings, while Oregon State has moved into the top tier as one of the league’s top three teams.

Beavers Offensive Line Suddenly Has A Bigger Question Than Fans Realized

Braydon Nelson is back in the mix, and his timing matters for an Oklahoma State offensive line that has already been forced to think on its feet. Coach Eric Morris called him a key contributor, and Nelsons background across multiple spots gives the staff some needed flexibility as the Cowboys prepare for UCF. He is expected to see the field alongside Shaun Torgeson and Ashton Lepo, which gives the line another experienced body at a position group that rarely gets to settle in for long.

The bigger issue now is not simply getting Nelson on the field, but figuring out where he belongs once he is there. Oklahoma State plans to use the game to sort through his best fit, and that could mean moving him around as the line shuffles and searches for the cleanest combination. For a unit that can use every available answer, Nelsons return creates a useful option, but also a new decision the staff has to make in real time. [Read more 🡒]

Braylin Presley Gives Oklahoma State Fans A Midseason Roster Question

Braylin Presley is back on Oklahoma States football roster as a wide receiver, giving the Cowboys another familiar name in the wideout room this season. After starting his college career at Oklahoma State in 2022 and later playing at Tulsa, Presley has rejoined the program midseason, a development that adds another layer to an already interesting family tie within the roster.

Coach Eric Morris confirmed Presley is with the team, though the eligibility picture is still being sorted out behind the scenes. For Oklahoma State, it is the kind of roster wrinkle that can matter well beyond the paperwork, especially when a player returns with previous ties to the program and joins a group that already includes his younger brother Braeden, while Brennan Presley remains the best-known name in the family around Stillwater. Chad Johnsons Oregon State Return Feels Bigger Than One Visit

Chad Johnsons long-awaited return to Oregon State carried more weight than a routine stop by a former star. The university helped arrange the visit, which brought him back in front of the football team and coaching staff for the first time in years and drew praise from athletic director Kevin Griffin and coach JaMarcus Shephard. For a program always looking to keep its past connected to its present, the sight of Johnson back around Corvallis served as a reminder of how much the Beavers still value the names that helped shape their identity.

Johnsons appearance also hinted at something more lasting than a one-off reunion. The conversation around his visit already has Oregon State fans looking ahead, with another opportunity for him to reconnect with the program coming later this month when the Beavers face Washington State. For a team that benefits from every bit of energy around the program, that kind of return can mean more than nostalgia. [Read more 🡒]
