Oregon State Fueled A Sideline Meltdown Colorado State Couldn't Hide

In an unprecedented move, Colorado State head coach Jim Mora Jr. replaced defensive coordinator Tyson Summers mid-game, raising eyebrows across college football.

Colorado State’s defense unraveled fast on Saturday, and Jim Mora Jr. didn’t wait long to make a move.

In a 56-point outing by Oregon State that ended in a 30-point loss for the Rams in Fort Collins, Colorado State switched defensive play-callers in the first half. Tyson Summers was relieved of that duty and replaced by Kenny McClendon, who sources told CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz will take over as the Rams’ new defensive coordinator.

Summers didn’t remain on the sideline after the change. He left and did not return.

“Tyson was relieved of his playcalling duties,” Mora told reporters after the game. “He left the field and is no longer with this football program.”

The move came mid-game, a rare coaching shakeup in the middle of live action. Summers started the afternoon on the sideline handling the defense, but once Mora made the switch, he was gone.

USA Sports sideline reporter Dalen Cuff said on the broadcast, via The Coloradan, that “co-defensive coordinator Kenny McClendon is calling the plays on the defensive side of the ball and has been since about midway through the first quarter. Tyson Summers, the normal DC and play-caller, has not been on the sideline since the first quarter.”

Colorado State’s defense didn’t show much sign of a reset after the switch. The Rams allowed 14 points in the first quarter, then gave up 21 in the second and another 21 in the second half as Oregon State kept piling it on.

And this wasn’t just a one-game problem. Colorado State entered the week ranked 129th nationally in scoring defense, giving up 34.3 points per game, and that number is only set to climb after surrendering 56 to the Beavers.

Mora, in his first season at Colorado State after leaving UConn, clearly decided he’d seen enough. The message was simple: the defense needed a new voice, and he wasn’t waiting until the final whistle to make it happen.

Oregon States Passing Attack Just Sent A Loud Early Message

The first Pac-12 game of the season at Canvas Stadium turned into a showcase for Oregon States passing game, and Braden Atkinson was at the center of it. In a 56-26 win over Colorado State, the quarterback kept the Beavers in rhythm from the start, piling up 413 yards and five touchdowns while helping set the tone for a night when the offense looked in command of the matchup.

Jesse Legree was just as important, stretching the field and finishing with three touchdown catches as Oregon State kept finding ways to attack through the air. His latest big night also continued a remarkable run of production, giving the Beavers another proof point that this passing game is more than just hot for one week and may be building into something much bigger. Oregon States Fast Start Helped Spark A Stunning Colorado State Meltdown

Oregon States fast start against Colorado State did more than put points on the board. It helped turn an already rough afternoon into a jarring sideline situation for the Rams, whose defensive coordinator Tyson Summers was gone by the break in a loss that quickly tilted out of control. For the Beavers, the early pressure and tempo were part of a result that rippled well beyond the final score.

Colorado State is now 2-3, and the fallout has already reached the coaching staff. Oregon State's Turnaround Suddenly Looks A Lot More Real

Oregon States latest road win offered another sign that the programs early-season surge is more than a one-week flash. Under JaMarcus Shephard, the Beavers went into Colorado State and handled business in a 56-26 victory, continuing a stretch that has started to make the turnaround look real instead of rhetorical.

Aaron Butler added one of the more memorable moments of the afternoon with a touchdown run, a reminder that this offense is finding production in a few different ways. And after building an early cushion, Oregon State never really let the Rams get comfortable, which is exactly the sort of control that makes a rebuilding team start to feel like a legitimate one.
