Oregon State Faces A Road Test That Could Reveal A Lot

This Halloween matchup promises a thrilling test as Oregon State faces a resilient Fresno State team with a strong home record and standout individual performances.

Oregon State walks into a Halloween road test at Fresno State with momentum and a 5-2 record, but the setting alone makes this one feel different. Fresno State at night is already a tough assignment, and the Bulldogs’ defense has given them enough backbone to make this a real challenge.

Fresno State’s season opened with a 39-0 loss to USC, but that rough start didn’t linger long. The Bulldogs reeled off four straight wins against overmatched opponents and briefly looked like a real Pac-12 contender.

Then came the swing games. Boise State beat them 38-31 in one of the early conference turning points, and a 26-23 loss to San Diego State was a jolt that suggested Fresno State may not be the force it first appeared to be.

Statistically, the Bulldogs sit in the middle of the Pac-12 on offense in most categories. On the other side of the ball, though, they’ve built something sturdier. Fresno State ranks second in the conference in scoring defense and is tied for the Pac-12 lead with a plus-eight turnover margin.

The offense runs through quarterback Jayden Mandal, who is in his first season as a starter. He has completed 63.1% of his throws for 1,393 yards, eight touchdowns and just one interception. He’s added 119 rushing yards and two scores, and he even has a 21-yard catch.

At receiver, Josiah Freeman remains one of the conference’s most productive returning targets. The 6-foot-5 senior has 32 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns, though he has gone without a receiving score in the last three games.

Ezekiel Avit has also emerged as a big-play threat. The 6-foot-2 junior has already set a career high with 373 receiving yards and has found the end zone four times. His 96-yard, two-touchdown outing against Boise State stood out.

Fresno State’s defense brings several impact players to the field. Dylan Hampsten, the San Jose State transfer, is tied for second in the Pac-12 with seven tackles for loss. He has 28 tackles, three sacks and one forced fumble.

K’vion Thunderbird has been the Bulldogs’ leading tackler by a wide margin. He ranks fourth in the conference with 61 tackles, including four for loss. The Arizona State transfer also showed his coverage chops last season with two interceptions and three pass breakups.

Simeon Harris has been just as disruptive from the nickel spot. He has 34 tackles, three interceptions and two pass breakups, and he’s made his mark as both a blitzer and a cover man.

There’s also an odd little note hanging over this game: Braden Atkinson has thrown 129 passes without an interception, while Matt Moore’s school record is 182.

The Halloween numbers are worth keeping in mind, too. Oregon State is 4-9-1 in games on Oct.

  1. Fresno State is 7-4-1 on Halloween, including 5-0-1 at home, though the Bulldogs haven’t played on that date since 2009.

The Beavers haven’t trailed at any point during their current five-game winning streak.

On the threat scale, this one lands at a 3. It could be Oregon State’s toughest road environment of the season, and the Halloween-night backdrop only sharpens it.

But Fresno State’s recent loss to San Diego State changed the feel around this matchup. The Bulldogs have shown cracks, and Oregon State has looked like the better team so far.

Boise States Strong Finish Changes The Feel Of The Pac-12 Race

Boise States road win at Washington State kept the Pac-12 picture tight and added another layer to Oregon States push in the league race.
