Six pre-snap penalties kept Oregon State from ever settling in Saturday night, and the Beavers paid for it in a 38-22 loss at Fresno State.
Five false starts and one illegal shift kept interrupting drives at Valley Children’s Stadium, with the mistakes showing up early and often for OSU. The Beavers finished with a second false start by guard Tyler Voltin late in the game, with less than 2:00 remaining and only a few thousand fans still in the stands as steady rain came down.
The damage was done long before that. Oregon State’s first three offensive possessions all ran into false starts at the worst possible moments.
Jake Reichle had a one-yard touchdown run wiped out by a false start, and the Beavers ended up turning the ball over on downs. Another false start on fourth-and-one pushed OSU into settling for a field goal.
Then a third penalty moved the Beavers from the 5-yard line back to the 10 on third-and-goal, leading to yet another field goal.
“Every self-inflicted error, we’re going to get it right, get it corrected and we’re going to talk about it,” tight end DeCorion Temple said.
The crowd was announced at 32,501, but the noise never seemed to be the issue. Oregon State coach JaMarcus Shephard made that clear after the game, pointing to execution rather than anything Fresno State was doing.
“Those are fundamental things that we got to make sure we correct,” Shephard said. “We have not really had those issues throughout the season.
Those are costly. We’re on the 1-yard line and jump offsides, that’s costly.
There was really nothing that they did that forced that. That was all self-inflicted and we got to be better there.”
Oregon State fell to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 play.

Oregon States Defense Just Gave Beaver Fans A Real Concern
Oregon States five-game winning streak came to an end in a 38-22 loss to Fresno State, and the result was as much about the Beavers defense as the final score. Fresno State controlled the game from the start, never letting Oregon State settle in, while Decorion Temple gave the offense a lift with six catches for 97 yards and Caleb Ojeda kept the Beavers within reach with three field goals.
The more troubling part for Oregon State was how little resistance it could muster against the Bulldogs passing game. Fresno State quarterback Braden Atkinson repeatedly found openings and kept the pressure on all night, leaving the Beavers chasing a game they never really got close to flipping. For a team that had been rolling, the loss was a reminder that the margin for error shrinks fast when the defense cannot get off the field. [Read more 🡒]
Oregon States Biggest Problem Showed Up In A Costly Loss
For Oregon State, the frustrating part of a 38-22 loss to Fresno State was not just the final score, but how avoidable so much of it felt. The Beavers had chances to make the game more manageable, yet repeated pre-snap mistakes and missed tackles kept putting them behind the chains and out of rhythm. Fresno State turned an early interception into a night of steady production, scoring on five touchdowns and a field goal across six possessions after that turnover.
Even with the yardage battle tilting in Oregon States favor, the Beavers never looked clean enough to turn that edge into control. Coach JaMarcus Shephard and his players were blunt afterward about the execution issues and the need to get better, which is the kind of message that usually follows a loss like this. The bigger concern now is whether the problems that showed up in this one were a one-game mess or a sign of something deeper the Beavers have to fix quickly. [Read more 🡒]
Oregon States First Real Test Exposed Problems That Could Derail This Season
Oregon States first real test of the season came with plenty of warning signs at Valley Childrens Stadium, where Fresno States pressure up front kept the Beavers from settling in and turned a promising matchup into a frustrating afternoon. The Bulldogs consistently disrupted Oregon States offensive line, and the Beavers never fully recovered from the mistakes that piled up around them.
Penalties and missed chances only made the damage worse, as Oregon State kept finding ways to stall when it had chances to build momentum. Fresno State, meanwhile, got enough production through the air to keep control of the game, leaving the Beavers with a clear list of issues to clean up before the schedule gets any less forgiving.
