Drew Mestemaker Expected to Hit Transfer Portal After Breakout Season - Could a Reunion with Eric Morris Be Next?
Drew Mestemaker’s next move might be the biggest quarterback domino of the offseason - and it could be pointing toward Stillwater.
According to multiple reports, Mestemaker is expected to enter the transfer portal. While the language around his decision has been cautious - “considered likely” and “expected” - all signs are pointing to the redshirt freshman quarterback testing the waters. And with Eric Morris now leading the charge at Oklahoma State, the connection is hard to ignore.
Let’s take a step back and appreciate just how wild Mestemaker’s rise has been.
This time two years ago, he wasn’t even a starting quarterback in high school. At Vandegrift High in Austin, Mestemaker was a safety and a punter.
That’s right - a punter. But Morris, then at North Texas, got a tip from a quarterback coach he trusted and decided to give the kid a shot as a walk-on.
Fast forward to now, and Mestemaker just wrapped up a season where he led the entire nation in passing yards with 4,129. He tied for second in the country in passing touchdowns with 31 - trailing only Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza. Not bad for someone who didn’t throw a varsity pass in high school.
Mestemaker’s breakout didn’t come out of nowhere, but it did come fast. He got his feet wet in 2024, appearing in five games as a true freshman and starting the Mean Green’s bowl game against Texas State.
In that one, he threw for 393 yards and two touchdowns, adding another 55 yards and a score on the ground. That performance was a preview of what was coming.
In 2025, as a redshirt freshman, he became the full-time starter - and the numbers were staggering. He topped 300 passing yards in five different games and never dipped below 200.
His masterpiece came in October against Charlotte, when he lit up the stat sheet with 608 passing yards and four touchdowns. Even in what was statistically his quietest outing - a 211-yard game against Washington State - he still tossed four touchdowns with zero interceptions.
At 6-foot-4 and 211 pounds, Mestemaker has the size, arm, and mobility to make plays all over the field. But it’s not just the raw stats that stand out - it’s the accolades.
He won the Burlsworth Trophy, given to the best player in the country who began their career as a walk-on. He was also named Offensive Player of the Year in the American Athletic Conference and took home Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Now, with the portal opening and his former coach settling in at Oklahoma State, the dots are easy to connect. Morris believed in Mestemaker before anyone else did, and that kind of trust runs deep. If Mestemaker does decide to reunite with Morris in Stillwater, it wouldn’t just be a feel-good story - it could be a game-changer for the Cowboys.
Of course, nothing’s official yet. The portal process can be unpredictable, and there’s sure to be a long line of suitors for a quarterback with Mestemaker’s production and upside. But if he does land in Stillwater, it would instantly shake up the Big 12 quarterback landscape.
From walk-on to national passing leader, Mestemaker’s story has already been remarkable. The next chapter? That’s still being written - but it’s one every college football fan should be watching closely.
