In Stillwater, Mekhi Ragland is making waves for the Cowboys, and he's doing it in a way that defies expectations for a 6-foot-11, 330-pound freshman. Despite limited playing time earlier this season, Ragland has emerged as a defensive standout, leading Oklahoma State in steals per 40 minutes among active players. His recent performance in the NIT win against Davidson was a testament to his impact, snagging three steals in just his first five minutes on the court.
Reflecting on his performance, Ragland admitted, “I didn’t really think about it until I sat down on the bench, and they were like, ‘Well, you need to rebound more, but you got three steals.’ I was just in the moment trying to make the right play.”
Ragland’s journey this season has been about seizing opportunities. With Oklahoma State short on big men, he’s been thrust into action, and he’s making the most of it.
Entering the NIT Round 2 game against Wichita State, Ragland has logged 69 minutes, with a significant chunk coming in postseason play. His increased time on the floor is translating into production, scoring 11 of his 19 total points in the last three games alone.
OSU coach Steve Lutz emphasized the value of game experience, noting, “There’s a huge difference between practice reps and game reps. You just can’t simulate it in practice.”
Ragland’s game against Davidson showcased his growing confidence. After his trio of steals, he converted an and-one to tie the game, earning a big cheer from the OSU fans. He wrapped up the night with five points, two rebounds, and an assist.
His path hasn’t been without challenges. Ragland missed his senior season at Sunrise Christian Academy due to a foot injury, but he’s steadily finding his rhythm.
“It’s just a time thing,” Ragland explained. “The more time you put into something, the easier it gets.”
With each game, Ragland is proving that he’s not just filling a spot on the roster-he’s becoming a key player to watch as the Cowboys continue their postseason journey.
