Mark Hagen's New Oregon State Contract Sparks Curiosity with Salary Twist

Oregon State's latest coaching contracts reveal strategic budget adjustments as Mark Hagen and Joe Seumalo join the staff with significant salary differences from their predecessors.

Oregon State's coaching staff is seeing some changes, with Mark Hagen stepping in as the new defensive line coach. Hagen’s contract, running through 2026, offers a prorated salary of $316,148.

This is slightly below what Inoke Breckterfield was set to earn before his departure to Utah. Meanwhile, Joe Seumalo, the new defensive tackles coach, has a deal through February 2027, bringing in $185,004 annually.

Breckterfield, who briefly joined Oregon State in December, was lined up for a $325,000 salary. Lance Guidry, another short-term hire as OSU’s defensive coordinator, left for Memphis and was initially set to earn $300,000 this year and $575,000 the next.

The Beavers recently announced Mike MacIntyre as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Known for his stints at FIU, Colorado, and San Jose State, MacIntyre's contract is still in the works, as confirmed by OSU’s public records office.

With a $3 million budget for JaMarcus Shephard’s assistants, OSU athletic director Scott Barnes has about $575,000 left to allocate. NCAA rules cap FBS coaching staffs at 10 full-time assistants who can recruit off-campus, while other staff members face certain recruiting restrictions.

Hagen, who was Louisville's co-defensive coordinator last season, is taking a pay cut from his previous $700,000 salary. His contract at Louisville ended in January. Seumalo, previously an analyst at Pitt, earned $350,000 as Arizona’s defensive line coach in 2024.

Hagen receives $11,000 for relocation expenses, a benefit not extended to Seumalo. Both coaches can earn a $5,000 bonus if the Beavers make it to a bowl game. Notably, Hagen and Seumalo have buyouts of $300,000 and $185,000, respectively, contrasting with the $50,000 buyouts for Breckterfield and Guidry.
