In Stillwater, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are gearing up for a highly anticipated wrestling dual against the Iowa Hawkeyes, and they’re bringing in a legendary figure to lead the charge. Daniel Cormier, a two-time UFC champion and former OSU All-American, is set to walk the Cowboys to the mat at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Under the leadership of David Taylor, the walk to the mat has become a celebrated tradition. This season has already seen notable figures like UFC fighter Diego Lopes, wrestling great John Smith, reigning world champ Zahid Valencia, and OSU quarterback Drew Mestemaker take part. Now, Cormier joins this esteemed list.
“Daniel Cormier is walking our team out,” Taylor announced with excitement. “He’s a legend here at Oklahoma State and has achieved legendary status beyond.
We’re thrilled to have him back. I’ve been reminding him constantly about the date to ensure he’s here.”
Cormier’s ties to OSU run deep. He was an All-American for the Cowboys in 2001, finishing as the NCAA runner-up at 184 pounds.
His influence extends to Cody Merrill, one of Taylor’s wrestlers, who trained under Cormier at Gilroy High School. Merrill’s impressive high school record includes a 109-0 streak and two California state titles, a testament to Cormier’s mentorship.
Taylor and Cormier’s relationship goes back years. “I’ve known Daniel since I was a kid,” Taylor shared.
“At the Olympic Training Center, he’d always look out for me, even if it meant beating me in video games and talking trash. It’s great to connect our histories and traditions with Oklahoma State wrestling.”
Beyond his collegiate achievements, Cormier’s wrestling accolades include two junior college national championships and a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships. His transition to MMA saw him amass a 22-3 record, holding both the UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight titles.
As the Cowboys prepare for their showdown with Iowa, Cormier’s presence adds a layer of excitement and inspiration. His journey from OSU standout to UFC legend serves as a beacon for the team, illustrating the heights that dedication and talent can reach.
